That was in 1605. He was first.

He was second, furthered Janszoon's exploration and mapping,
circumnavigated Australia and "discovered" New Zealand and Tasmania.

It gets complicated...

At its most basic there are two continents, North and South America
with Panama being the division, either the country or the canal
depending on who you talk to.

That portion of North America which lies south of the US-Mexican
border can be called Central America and may or may not include the
islands in the Caribbean Sea. (The southern tip of Florida and its
Key Islands are considered to be in North America, not Central
America.)
                        
Then there's Latin America which is those countries which were
colonized by Spain and Portugal and where Spanish or Portuguese is
the predominant language today. That would be South and Central
America excluding those small countries on the Atlantic coast carved
out of Brazil but does include some Caribbean Islands such as Cuba
and Puerto Rico.

      Title: Baked Sweet Plantains
 Categories: Vegetables, Latin, Wine, Alcohol, Caribbean
      Yield: 6 Servings
 
      4 md Plantains; very ripe
    1/2 c  Dry white wine or light rum
    1/4 c  Dry sherry
    1/4 c  Packed brown sugar
      4 tb Butter; salted
           Ground cinnamon; to taste
           Ground nutmeg; to taste
 
  Preheat the oven to 350. Arrange the plantains in an oven proof
  casserole, pour the wine, sherry, and sugar over them, and
  sprinkle with butter and cinnamon. Cover the plantains and bake 20
  to 25 minutes. Uncover, turn the plantains over, baste, and bake,
  uncovered, until golden brown on top, another 15 minutes. Serve
  hot.
  
  NOTES : "For this recipe, select very ripe plantains that are soft
  to the touch, with skins that are almost black. Don't be misled by
  the cinnamon and brown sugar - this is not a dessert. It is a
  wonderful accompaniment to spicy Creole dishes."
