GJ> She should be un-spookable by now, if she has been travelling with you
GJ> for a while. The fried scorpions are supposed to be good.

ML> If they taste anything like what they look like, I'd be
ML> happy with that. As far as my association with Lilli goes,
ML> she usually doesn't mind just so my breath can't be smelled
ML> from a distance of a foot or so, so she tolerated with
ML> amusement my recent adventures with black puddings, pig
ML> feet, raw mussels, and veal kidneys. She did draw the line

Those should all be safely not too aromatic; of course she would not
object to garlic, as I could not imagine you associating with a
non-garlic eater.

ML> at horse, because she used to keep them as sport animals:

There have been horses in my family, but that would not stop me eating
them. (I'm sure daughter Liz would object, though.)

ML> when I proposed ordering an entrecote chevaline, she
ML> grimaced a little and said that that would be all right,
ML> but I knew that it wasn't really all right, and my Hilton
ML> didn't have an executive lounge, but her Sheraton did,
ML> and I wanted to have that lounge access, didn't I.

Sound reasoning!

ML> Thursday I get to investigate the offerings at Terminal 5.
GJ> If everything is now working properly it should be good. New
GJ> terminals put on their best performance at the beginning.
 ML>
ML> European oddities. Terminal 5 was hellish to get to from
ML> T3 - hundreds of lost people, British Airways personnel
ML> shouting directions for them to queue up for buses that
ML> stubbornly resisted showing up. Turns out it would have

I thought all that chaos had been sorted out long ago. Or was that a
result of Libyan activities? Now I suppose the Japanese earthquake
and airport closures will cause more disruptions to air travel. The
horror of that 8.9 quake, and the cost in lives and property will take
years for the country to recover from.

ML> and gone through security again. To add indignity, even
ML> our used business class tickets and Lilli's Emerald status
ML> (roughly equivalent to my Star Alliance status but on
ML> OneWorld and having better perks) got us only halfway to
ML> the fast track (we were weeded out between passport check
ML> and the onerous and superfluous security), owing to our

(In my mind, almost all security is onerous and superfluous!)

ML> onward tickets being Euro Traveller (rather than Club
ML> Europe). Be that as it may, we were admitted into the
ML> the Galleries First Class lounge rather than the regular
ML> one. The signal difference is that the former offers
ML> free-pour Comtes de Champagne, while the latter has Lanson
ML> on request only. Lanson is 90% as good and costs 75% less.

Training attendants to correctly classify passengers by the tickets
they hold must be a major part of their preparation for the job.

ML> My breakfast was black pudding and bacon butty with
ML> half a bottle of Comtes de Champagne, retail value
ML> about what the London-Brussels leg cost in toto.

Champagne makes an excellent breakfast beverage, even if unaccompanied
by food. I would prefer Danish style smoked salmon to black pudding.

ML> We had only an hour to soak up the atmosphere, which
ML> was semi-posh but far better than mingling with
ML> the vulgar plebs (a Latin word) and the base canaille
 ML> (and one that's French).

Is there a window where you can look out over the great unwashed, but
high enough so that we can't press our grubby noses against it,
looking in at the upper crust?

GJ> Instant noodles were considered to be the most important Japanese
GJ> invention of the 20th century. Their initial purpose was to feed the
GJ> thousands of survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. They were
GJ> cheap to produce, easy to transport, and only needed a small amount of
GJ> hot water to make a nutritious, life-saving meal. And of course
GJ> impecunious uni students have been surviving on them ever since.

ML> Noodles may have saved the immediate postwar Japanese, but it
ML> was only the inspiration of this hardship that spurred Taiwanese
ML> immigrant Wu Pai-Fu (Wu Baifu, other names possible) to invent
ML> instant noodles in the 1950s.

The Japanese claim that invention as theirs. Where did Wu migrate tu?

GJ> beef (usually "Ox and Palm" brand), canned Chinese "Spam", canned
GJ> "roast pork" and the strongly flavoured canned "Mackerel Pike in
GJ> Natural Oil", and of course, rice.

ML> Here we can get canned eel and bangus with ease; regular mackerel
ML> sometimes; not seen mackerel pike, or perhaps I've resisted looking.

I think that the version of "tinpis" sold in trade stores in PNG comes
from Peru or Chile, and was labelled that way. 777 or 555 brand. It
has a very strong fish flavour which is impossible to overcome. For
some reason it is very popular in the PNG Highlands, where it is added
to rice or kau-kau (sweet potato).
