We never had a chance to go blueberry picking last summer so I
haven't any wild low bush berries for a long time. I did buy several
flats of commercial high bush berries last summer when they were at
a good price and froze them. Here is what I used some for tonight:
a mixture of diced, skin on, firm, tart apples (Granny Smith and
Macintosh), blueberries, the zest of a whole lemon and the juice of
a quarter lemon together with two 1 oz pouches of a mixed berry
syrup and a scant half cup of sugar. I almost made pie crust but got
lazy and at the last minute made a quick oatmeal crumble for a fruit
betty instead. Feeling virtuous I added oat bran and wheat germ to
the crumb mix. It came out fine.

There's a story behind the fruit syrup pouches. Jeunesse, a
cosmetics outfit that Roslind buys from was pushing a diet
supplement called Reserve, "a delicious supplement that contains
antioxidant Reserveratrol, acai, pomegranate, green tea, grapeseed,
and Aloe vera." 30 X 1 oz serving pouches for $79.95 wholesale,
$134.95 suggested retail. Yep an amazing $4.49 per oz which when
diluted with water makes an 8 oz beverage. Well Roslind showed the
literature to her hair clients and lots of them wanted to order it.
So she did and then four of them backed out, so we are stuck with
four cases of the stuff. Luckily we are only out the wholesale
amount and it does taste OK. Besides the advertized "health"
ingredients the product also has, in descending order, sweet dark
cherry juice, blueberry juice, concord grape juice, then the health
stuff and finally citric acid. It tastes of blueberries with a touch
of cherry. I don't drink it as a beverage but it does make a good
pie additive. But my god 120 pouches works out to 60 pies!

And why don't people just buy fruit and drink tea? [Rhetorical
question]
