"The term was first used by (then) Cmdr Charles F. Goodeve, RCNVR, 
during World War II while trying to counter the German magnetic mines 
that were playing havoc with the British fleet. The mines detected the 
increase in magnetic field when the steel in a ship concentrated the 
Earth's magnetic field over it. Admiralty scientists, including Goodeve, 
developed a number of systems to induce a small "N-pole up" field into 
the ship to offset this effect, meaning that the net field was the same 
as background. Since the Germans used the gauss as the unit of the 
strength of the magnetic field in their mines' triggers (this was not 
yet a standard measure), Goodeve referred to the various processes to 
counter the mines as degaussing. The term became a common word.

The original method of degaussing was to install electromagnetic coils 
into the ships, known simply as coiling. In addition to being able to 
continually bias the ship, coiling also allowed the bias field to be 
reversed in the southern hemisphere, where the mines were set to detect 
"S-pole down" fields. British ships, notably cruisers and battleships, 
were well protected by about 1943."

Why that tidbit stuck in my mind I don't know, not the specifics just 
enveloping a ship in a coil.  Probably my background in electronics I 
spoze.  I have a vague memory of them also developing a floating version 
of the coil where they could have a ship sail into it and zap it before 
it took off on a cruise through the minefields.  But there is an even 
older methodology to handle the ships compass, which you alluded to. 
I've read about the process of spinning the ship to workout the 
compensation needed, long ago and couldn't possibly create a coherent 
explanation without LOTS of research.  :-)  Seems like we did that on my 
second ship, brand spanking new missile frigate, during my brief naval 
career during sea trials.

MMMMM------------------------SALAD RULES-----------------------------

   Good salads are easy to make and they are wonderful to eat.
   Unfortunately, bad salads are also easy to make. Two important rules
   for excellent salads are:
      1. Use the freshest, cleanest greens available and
      2. Use a delicious, homemade dressing.

   Fortunately, a tasty salad dressing is easy to make. Basic oil and
   vinegar dressing (vinaigrette) takes less than two minutes from start
   to finish. If you want to dress it up a bit, it may take a moment
   longer.

   Good quality ingredients are important for the best flavor. Although
   any type of vegetable oil can be used, many prefer the special flavor
   of olive oil. A mild vinegar, perhaps a wine or herb vinegar, gives
   just enough flavor without overpowering the flavor of the entire
   dressing. No matter how much dressing you make, the proportion of oil
   to vinegar remains the same: 3 to 1.

   Various seasonings and extras can be added. Fresh or dried herbs such
   as dill or basil are good. Crumbled blue cheese or chopped green
   pepper or onions are other possibilities.

   Dress the salad just before serving, tossing well so that the greens
   are evenly and lightly coated with dressing. One way to wreck a salad
   is to use too much dressing. It can drown the salad and make the
   greens limp and soggy. If you find there's a lot of dressing left in
   the bowl after the salad is gone, you're using too much dressing.
   Hold back a little next time.

   Washing lettuce is very important because greens are magnets for dirt.
   Nothing ruins a salad faster than having grit as the surprise
   ingredient.

   Because oil and water don't mix, lettuce leaves also need to be dried
   before being mixed with salad dressing. If they are not dry, they
   won't accept a coating of oil, and the dressing will just end up in
   the bottom of the bowl.

   Wash leafy greens in several changes of water, letting grit settle to
   the bottom and lifting out the greens while changing the water. Be
   careful not to bruise the leaves.

   To dry leaf lettuce, wrap the leaves lightly in a clean towel and pat
   dry. You can also drain them in a colander or swing them in a wire
   salad basket. Many people swear by salad spinners for drying and
   storing lettuce.

   To wash head lettuce, core the solid part of the stem and hold the
   head upside down under running water. Place on a terry towel in the
   refrigerator and cover with another towel. In a few hours the lettuce
   will be dry.

   If you need to store lettuce, wash it first, wrap it in a damp towel
   and store it in a plastic bag or tightly covered container in the
   refrigerator.
