Of course, if Anne is still not up for visitors, I
could make an abbreviated stay and sleep at cheapish
hotels: I'm still looking for a few Hilton stays, and
if I get 12 more than I plan to, I'll be retained as
Diamond, which is pretty snazzy.

That sounds like a good idea - I wonder, though, if
the sqwawks of a few conservatives would carry the
day if that was suggested.

I had ribs at the Bill Johnson's Big Apple stand
a couple days ago while watching the Brewers take
the M's 2-1 in 10. The game was not ideal, but
neither was the catering. Our friend Alex, who is
a big Milwaukee fan, couldn't get off work, so
Bill Swisher and I rooted for your team without
any second thoughts. Fat lot of good that did.
The ribs? Some combination of baked and steamed
with a little grill time somewhere in there. They
were not altogether bad, because I got the hot and
spicy sauce on the side, instead of the regular way,
which is slathered in sweet sauce. Mushy and not
altogether good, though. Yesterday we saw the M's
take a quick 3-1 lead in the 1st (Ichi led off,
Figgins tatered, and the rest of the guys came
through) only to lose 5-4 to the Shrubs in 10.

It's been a good week in the 75F sun, though as
often happens, my favored team has lost 3 of 4
in the games I've seen. By the way, spring
training has gotten horridly expensive, the
top seats running $20 or more at most parks and
the cheapest $5-8. Not counting a per ticket
service charge and a per order service charge,
which it is advisable to pay because many games
are sold out. And the scalping is ferocious -
Cubs tickets have been going for over double face,
so I didn't go see them this year.

I'd thought of seeing 2 games most days but have
ended up seeing less than 1 per day.

PUCHERO [pot au feu]

servings: 6

3 1/2 lb beef shank; or 2 lbs stewing beef, 2" cubes
1 1/2 ts salt
1 stalk celery, 4" lengths
4 green onions, 4" lengths
8 oz chorizo or hot pepperoni
2 md potatoes, pared and quartered
1/4 lb green beans
1 sm hd cabbage quartered
2 Tb oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 md onion, sliced
1/2 c tomato sauce
1 c canned chickpeas

Put beef pieces in a big pot, add enough water to cover it,
add salt, celery, and green onions. Bring to a boil, reduce
heat, and simmer for 1 1/2 hr. Add chorizo and cook 30 min.

Remove beef from pot, bring stock to a boil, add potatoes,
cook 5 min; add green beans and cabbage, cook for 10 min.

Saute garlic and onion in hot oil. Add beef and tomato sauce,
simmer for a few min; add 3 c of the broth and bring to
boil. Add chickpeas and heat through.

Place beef in a deep serving dish, arrange vegetables around meat.
Cut chorizo in thin slices and use as garnish. Pour sauce over
beef and vegetables and serve hot.
