It's a regionalism, or used to be.  You guys, or us guys to be even more
grammatically incorrect, includes both genders.

The bronchitis is probably the key.  It's hard to work up any enthousiasm
for any task when the hardest thing you do all day is breathe.

They're generally very appreciated.  The ones that are falling apart are
often the best ones.

In other words, it's actually useful.  I've made a meatloaf in the
microwave, and finished off baked potatoes, but generally I use to reheat
leftovers and make tea.

Mine hasn't done that yet (knocks self on head) but then it's not a serger. 
It's a bonehead (or wooden head to carry on the metaphor) simple steel case
Singer.  If it dies, there's another machine in the house.  The button hole
function on that one stinks though.
