ML> I like my wanderings. I do try to check in periodically,
 ML> though.

NB>> He's still drinking and chasing nursing students...? ;)
JW> He's got more class than that: he drinks and he chases the
 JW> grandmothers of nursing students.
ML> It's just as likely they chase him, and he can do okay
 ML> without actively angling.

Recently, while in Gore, in the deep south of NZ, I was found by a
rapacious group of local widows, who competed with each other for my
favours. It was quite frightening!

Just yesterday I was Skyped by a young schoolteacher I had worked with
when in Nauru, in 1998. She is now working at a school in Suzhou,
China, and has invited me to visit her. Unfortunately, from next
Wednesday, when I am to be operated on, I have to stay in a hospital
for a week, for the first time in my life, after having a worn-out hip
joint replaced, and will then have to spend some time in recovery
before going to China.

You may be interested in some further details of the Qantas A380
engine failure last year, which have come out as result of an ABC
investigation.

When the Trent engine blew, the plane was over Batam Island, and bits
dropped on an Indonesian school, one piece of a turbine wheel missing
a small boy be a few centimetres. They knew it was a Qantas plane,
from the flying kangaroo on part of the cowling that fell. It was
shown on local TV while the plane was still on its way to Singapore.

The problems that the pilot had to confront were that 2 bundles of
wiring were cut, which resulted in some spoilers and all leading edge
slats inoperative, half the brakes also inoperative, and the
anti-skids didn't work. The plane was 50 tonne over landing weight,
and the left wing was 10 t lighter than the right one, with fuel still
streaming out as the plane landed. Consulting the computer, the pilot
found he could just make it, using 3900 metres of the 4000 m runway.

The fire trucks were out, ready, at the end of the strip, when the
plane came in, and stopped 100 m from the end, with the pilot braking
by feel, knowing that too hard braking would lock the wheels, which
would blow in a second. The brake disks were incandescent, at 900
degrees C, while fuel still poured from the ruptured wing tank, and
the no. 1 engine kept running, and couldn't be stopped. Water from
the fire tender was tried, but it was not until foam was used before
it stopped. Passengers were held in the plane for an hour while all
the outside area was being made safe.

As you probably know, the cause of the engine failure was a broken
stub pipe feeding oil to a turbine bearing. That fatigue failure
resulted in oil pouring into the combustion chamber, igniting and
over-speeding the turbine, which flew apart into 3 pieces.

During the life of the Rolls Royce Trent engines on A380s, 49 had been
changed by RR because of oil leaks, and fatigue cracks had been found
in other oil pipes. The pipe which failed on the Qantas plane had
been incorrectly machined to take a filter, which resulted in the
thickness of one side of the pipe being about half the thickness of
the other side.

It was mentioned at the end of that program that RR were competing for
the Dreamliner engine supply contract. RR have been saying very
little. Qantas is suing them for $80 million, while the plane
insurers are also suing RR for $150 million.
