Ärende: VELOCETTE LE 10403
==========================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

DD> Glen Jamieson Said to Dave Drum about ENGINEERS 10401

GJ> DD> According to my history of Velocette, designer Charles Udall
GJ> DD> developed the Velocette LE as a "conceived-as-a-whole" design,
GJ> DD> with engine, gearbox, drive shaft and bevel box in a single
 GJ> DD> unit to do a specific

GJ> A friend of mine had an LE Velocette, which was very much a "Lady's
GJ> bike", with its easy to clean step-through configuration, leg
GJ> shields, foot boards, hand gear change and hand lever starter. Now
GJ> there are hundreds of little scooters using a similar configuration,
GJ> but they are all far noisier than the water-cooled LE.

DD> The Velocette LE was a British motorcycle made by Velocette. The
DD> designation LE stood for "little engine". Used by over fifty British
DD> Police forces, the police riders became known as "Noddies" because
DD> they were required to "nod" to senior officers, and the LE was
DD> nicknamed "the Noddy Bike". Production ended in 1970 when the company
DD> ran into financial problems and went into voluntary liquidation.

I thought the term, "Noddy" came from a British children's TV cartoon
character, who drove a little open car everywhere. That became known
as the "Noddy car", which name has been given to short, high cars such
as the short wheelbase Toyota BJ40 4-wheel drive.

The LE was a bike before its time, intended for riders who wanted
2-wheeled transport that they could ride in ordinary clothes, and
which would not exude messy liquids over their suits. It was despised
by the macho riders of what they considered to be "real" bikes, like
Nortons, other Velocettes, AJS, Matchless, Guzzi, etc, which could be
tinkered with constantly. I wonder if there are any LEs still around?
They would be great collectors items.
