==========================
Hi Nancy,

RH> My mom did it all the time when I was growing up. It was made a couple
RH> of weeks or so after the holiday as she did not "strip" the meat from

NB> For whatever reason, I'm drawing a blank trying to remember what we
NB> did growing up as far as soup is concerned... I do remember picking
 NB> meat
NB> off the bones for sandwiches, casseroles, etc in the days after the
NB> holiday... and digging out the yummy stuffing from the inside of the
NB> carcass where it was down between the bones... I think we must have
NB> made soup from the bones, though, as I do remember doing it myself in
NB> the very early days of our marriage... as a perfectly normal thing to
NB> be doing... For some reason, it seems a very long time ago... (G)

Digging out the bits of stuffing was the best part. With a family of 7,
it seemed there was never enough stuffing to go around. It might last
for a couple of meals but never more than that. Now that Steve smokes
the birds, I make dressing. (G)

RH> microwave days). The soup was always made in her stock pot that was
RH> also the fry pot for the one coil on her electric stove that could sink
RH> into a well for frying. She always made it with mixed veggies and rice
RH> & served it with the warning to "watch out for bones."

NB> I've got one of those coils on the stove I have now, but I don't think
NB> that my parents' stove(s) ever had one.

Mom's new (1977) stove doesn't have it. She missed that feature for a
few years but then got used to doing the soup and other things by other
methods.

RH> In 2003, we flew from HI to AZ just before Thanksgiving in
RH> anticipation of Robert's birth. We had dinner at my sister's house.
RH> Afterward, as I was taking the meat off the bones, I asked her what she
RH> wanted to do with the bones. She said to toss them--so I did, into a
RH> bag in the cooler we'd brought. I took them back over to Rachel's and
RH> made a pot of soup.

NB> Good call. ;) No point in wasting good bones if you have a place to
NB> cook them... If you'd been staying at your sister's, you might have
NB> done what I did at my m-i-l's... just make the soup there... ;)

At that point I wouldn't stay there. Partly to be with Rachel when the
baby came, partly because my sister smokes like a chimney and partly
because she didn't have a guest room at that point. What she had used as
one was remodeled into a nursery when she had her 2nd baby 12 1/2 years
after the first one.

RH> I have made turkey soup (or chicken) for years using the bones from
RH> the holiday birds. It's different from my mom's but I'll always tell
RH> those eating to "watch out for the bones", as she did. (G)

NB> That's how you can tell it's genuine... those little pesky bones that
NB> masquerade as little scraps of meat and make it into the final
NB> product, no matter how hard you try to sort them all out... ;)

Yes, I've triple sorted it and still come up with bones when it's
served.

NB> NB>> ... If you're trying to drive me crazy, you're too late.

RH> This one is going into my collection, thank you. (G)

 NB> Quite welcome... ;) I'm a little surprised you didn't already have
 NB> it, though... ;)

Should have, it seems that's the way I'm running most of the time. (G)

Catch you later,
