 -> -> RH> just not the kind in the Kosher case.
 ->  -> It's like the Wegmans Organics meat lines... sometimes there's a
 -> -> store coupon for them, but the only sort of sale is the "move it
 ->  -> now" type...
 -> RH> Bingo. That's what often happens. They'll mark the smoked fish
 -> RH> down to half price to move it.
 -> After a while they get tired of seeing the same old stock still
 -> sitting there unwanted, and give some incentive... ;)
 ->
 RH> I've scored things that way in antique stores too. With food though,
 RH> the incentive is often the pull date. Some things get sent back, but
 RH> others get marked with an Eat Me Quick price to make it move. I've
 RH> scored some seriously expensive cheeses that way before.

Selling it, even at drastically reduced, is better for the bottom line
than just pulling it. :) Besides, maybe they'll get you to taste it
that way, and then maybe even buy it at full price... ;)

 -> RH> OTOH I found frozen fish at 75% off yesterday too. It was
 -> RH> all prepared stuff, but the brands weren't selling and they
 -> RH> seriously marked them down to get rid of them. One was
 -> RH> manufactured in Mexico, but the other two were US-caught and
 -> RH> processed as far as I know.
 -> Still have to watch what you're grabbing... the orange sticker isn't
 -> the only important bit of info.. ;) I don't usually see anything
 -> reduced more than half off unless they REALLY have to move it fast or
 -> are discontinuing it... and often not even then... :)

 RH> The fish was the latter; it doesn't sell, so they want the shelf space
 RH> for something else.

Makes sense... and canny shoppers can use that to their own advantage...
presuming, of course, that it is something fit for eating... (G)

 -> Speaking of which, I finally brought out those half-price tenderloin
 -> pieces from the freezer on Monday... served them with the end of a
 -> bag of small red potatoes and some fresh asparagus (on sale for
 -> 1.99/lb, down a dollar from the week before, and down two from what
 -> it's been most of the winter, definitely a BUY price)... since
 -> Valentine's Day was Friday (our shopping day, when we generally grab
 -> something quick to eat there at the store), and Saturday and Sunday
 -> were already spoken for, this was a belated V-Day supper... ;)

 RH> Yum. Sounds OK to me. My Valentine's dinner was...dunno. I think
 RH> it was leftovers. :-)

I don't always do anything special for Valentine's, even with a husband
of 40 years now... but sometimes I'm just in the mood to do something a
little special... It was actually the same meal I might have made for no
occasion at all, but being so close to the day, and the tenderloin being
a somewhat rare splurge nowadays, I told him it was for Valentine's.. ;)

 -> RH> Often no, but I keep an eye out. I got Newman's Hermits for
 ->  RH> a buck a package on Friday.  The store doesn't carry Newman's
 -> RH> cookies and got some by mistake. The pull date was way out
 ->  RH> and I love hermits, so....
 -> Easy decision... (G)

 RH> Total no-brainer. Besides, Mom likes hermits too.

So she wouldn't complain about them showing up in the house... ;)

 RH> Got some store brand rice mixes for the food bank too, marked down
 RH> to 12 cents each. Not the greatest stuff, but if there's nothing
 RH> in the house it's at least hot.

And proffers some calories, even if not the most nutritious one could
get... At one point, I was buying groceries for a single guy living in
a motel room... it was sometimes quite a brain-teaser, to figure out how
to get the best nutrition into him, given no refrigeration and IIRC no
way to heat things either... so it had to taste at least edible cold...
and be fairly shelf stable... oh, and be something he was willing to
eat...  (G)

 -> RH> We have a mosque in the next town East, so there's a Muslim
 ->  RH> population around now.
 -> I see more of the head-scarfs on women now... permitted by employers
 -> as acceptable dresscode... We have an Islamic Center, built a few
 -> years ago now... and many smaller places of worship all around town...

 RH> It makes for interesting stuff in the grocery store.

That, too...  :)

 -> RH> The store is open to anyone of course, but I'm not sure most
 -> RH> local-born Americans want to watch their dinner dispatched
 ->  RH> while they wait.
 -> It could make an interesting school field trip, though... ;)
 ->
 RH> Most definitely.

Another lesson for the kids in where food really comes from... :)
