The Flying Saucer, though a chain, is pretty fabled in
these parts, hosting as it does beer releases, tastings,
the whole shebang, and offering about a hundred drafts,
ranging from the big brewers' best (or worst) to famous
rarities from exotic lands (mostly Belgium), to the pride
of Texas.

Chris 1, whose job in life seems to be designated driver,
came by to take a bunch of us to the Austin outlet, a ways
up north I think past the UT campus - it's hard to tell when
you're sitting in the wayback.

We had a private room in the back for our party of three
beers apiece (we got tickets) plus "heavy appetizers."

I had the Buffalo Bayou milk stout, because I like stouts,
had my pills with me, and had gone to high school within
walking distance of said body of water. It was coffeeish,
not cafe-au-laitish, rather rich and smooth, and I liked it.

Staying true to type, I next tried the 512 pecan porter,
also nice and rich and smooth but with little of the nut
character that I'd have expected.

I donated my third ticket toward a bottle of wine that my
friend Bob was ordering but did not stay to taste it, as I
was feeling rather dragged-out and sleepy.

As far as the heavy appetizers went, we were hoping for
something maybe barbecuelicious, but we got a carefully
calibrated amount (chains, bah!) of standard bar food
(chains, bah!).

As I was chatting with folks, I missed the first round
of food, fondly imagining that there would be plenty.
There wasn't - after a certain number of plates came out,
that was it, kaput; after some of us protested, they
brought out ... menus for a la carte ordering. Apparently
the more stomach-conscious got three or four go arounds
and depleted the trough early. What I tasted:

rather hot hot wings of the standard sort, cheap vinegar
hot sauce but at least hotter than Frank's or Texas Pete's,
mixed with (chains, bah!) margarine and poured over not
very meaty wing segments;

rather monochromatic quesadillas filled with excessively
mild jacky cheese (it is a testimony to how desperate I
was that I even bothered to try these);

chicken fingers of the ordinary sort with standard-
looking dipping sauces that I paid no attention to;

soft pretzels with dips, pretty good once you scraped
the salt off them (it is a testimony to how desperate I
was that I even bothered to try these);

some cheese cubes and cruditeish things that I took no
notice of.

The food was all wholesome, all boring, what there was
of it. I was not super impressed with the hospitality
of the Flying Saucer, though, truth be told, I could
have drunk more had I chosen to.

When I'd talked to everyone I wanted to talk to and
determined that there would be no more food forthcoming,
a hopped a ride with someone else, leaving Chris 1 and
Lilli behind. That hotel bed sure felt good.
