Ärende: Books and reading
=========================
Ruth Haffly Said to Dave Drum about Books and reading

RH> DD> Not necessarily. And it depends on your definition of science
RH> DD> fiction. I prefer to refer to the genre "sci-fi" as speculative
RH> DD> fiction. Which pretty much leaves out the "space opera" which
RH> DD> give much of what people think is "sci-fi" a bad name.

RH> DD> If you mean are they space operas - nope, they're not.

RH> OK, Steve is into both. He's watching, thru Amazon Prime videos,
RH> "Farscape". It has a bunch of critters that look like they came out
RH> of either Star Wars or Star Trek.

I'm not much on "space hooligans" (aliens) as portrayed in a lot of
films like, errrm "Alien" or "The Swarm", etc. My tolerance for space
opera stops about at the original Star Wars. Or maybe ET.

Now, movies that make you think - like Close Encounters I really enjoy.

RH> RH> DD> And I must say that I have learned a *LOT* of actual
RH> RH> DD> history from reading the alternate histories - since they
RH> RH> DD> needs must explain the real McCoy before taking it off on
RH> RH> DD> the alternate tangent.

RH> RH> OK, I'll go with historic fiction but not off the wall sci-fi
RH> RH> type.

RH> DD> One of my favourite, non-series, alternate history stories is
RH> DD> called "The Two Georges" by Richard Dreyfuss (yes, the actor)
RH> DD> and Harry Turtledove (yes, the Doctor of Byzantine History).
RH> DD> The book depicts a world in which the American Revolution never
RH> DD> happened and all of North America remains a part of the British
RH> DD> Empire.

RH> Now that might catch my attention. I read one once where the premise
RH> was that Germany was about to get the A bomb and win the war. Thru
RH> some sort of time gate, people were able to go back and change
RH> things (I don't remember how) to alter the course of history to make
RH> it what we know now. I recently finished one called "From Sea to
RH> Shining Sea" about the Clark family, mostly George Rogers and
RH> William, and the Lewis & CLark expedition. More of a historic
RH> fiction, actually, and quite good.

An author I can recommend to you without qualm is Kenneth Roberts
(you'll have to check his books out of the library. AFAIK they are long
out of print). Set in Maine and New England about the time of the
American Revolution - Rabble In Arms, Boon Island, Northwest Passage,
Oliver Wiswell, etc.

RH> DD> Title: Byzantine Pilaf
RH> DD> Categories: Rice, Poultry, Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits
RH> DD> Yield: 2 servings

RH> Looks good, and with all that spicing, should probably taste good as
RH> well. I'd probably use brown rice and tweak the cooking time, but
RH> that's my choice.

Yes'm, it certainly is. By the same token, there is nothing wrong with
long-grain white rice or Basmati/Texmati in that dish. Certainly enough
vitamins/minerals from other things in there. Bv)= Or, for that
matter one could probably use barley in place of the rice. It would have
a different taste/texture but would still be wicked good.
