Which doesn't seem to me to comport with your association
of them with "wack jobs." The one has money as a big motivation;
the other, by your description, does not.

Nope. "But I was only joking" is not a great excuse, not much
better than "but I was drunk."

Annie has a sister, from whom she is estranged. This sister
used to be quite svelte and glamorous and well known as one
of the hot tickets in town (Annie herself was not so svelte,
somewhat less glamorous, and perhaps a lukewarm ticket).

Anyhow, an acquaintance told Annie that he had seen (or seen
a picture of) the sister and that "she was HUUUGE. Like you."
For those who know, Annie is overweight, as many of us are,
but she's not grossly huuuge; and she was totally mortified.

I told Annie that she was far too upset about this, but if
she wanted to exorcise this particular demon, she should
express her displeasure to the guy.

So we ran into him yesterday, and she told him off in a
relatively calm way (I was proud of her). I wandered off, and
the rest of this is based on her later telling me about the
rest of the encounter. The guy was rather taken aback and
denied ever having said anything like that, whereupon his wife
said, you did, too, every word of it. The explanation: "I must
have been drunk."

In her eyes, in my eyes, in the law's eyes, that's a poor
excuse, perhaps even an exacerbating factor.

Stuffed mushroom casserole
categories: heirloom, vegetarian, side
yield: 1 pan

3 boxes fresh white mushrooms (I imagine 12 oz each?)
3 kaiser rolls, grated
1/2 c olive oil
1 ts salt
1 ts pepper
1/4 c grated cheese (Romano or Parmesan)
1 sm cn whole plum tomatoes, drained and chopped
1/2 c juice from tomato can
1 ts garlic powder
1/2 c seasoned bread crumbs
1 Tb parsley flakes
2 Tb margarine
1 sm onion, chopped

Remove caps from stems of mushrooms. Do not cut into
pieces. Boil mushroom stems and caps 5 min, then
drain and rinse thoroughly. Squeeze any excess water
from mushrooms.

In mixing bowl, mix grated kaiser rolls, seasoned
bread crumbs, olive oil, salt, pepper, onion,
grated cheese, garlic powder and parsley until
moist. If too dry, add a little more olive oil.

Grease 1-1/2 qt baking dish with margarine. Layer
mushrooms first, then bread mixture, then repeat
process until finished. Top with tomatoes and
juice, then dab with margarine.

Bake 1 hr uncovered at 350F, rotating the pan every
10 to 15 min.
