Ärende: Flexible Hours
======================

RH> I could never go that long--I need some sleep to function.

DD> I do too. Just that in those days I could go longer without sleep.
DD> These days I usually get six to eight hours -- more if I manage a nap.

RH> Most of the time if I nap, I don't sleep as well at night so I try not
RH> to nap. Might need to the next few days with grandbabies visiting (and
RH> Deborah). Logan (2 1/2 years) is busy enough to wear me out just
RH> watching him. Jaxon (7 months) is much more laid back.

I snooze whenever my body tells me it's time to lay back and close my eyes.
Sometimes it's a half-hour nap. Other times as long as two hours. And, unlike
your experience, it doesn't seem to affect my nightly session with the blankets
and pillows on my bed.

RH> My dad got his working start in the lumber yard his dad worked in. Dad
RH> was put into the office, earning 15 cents an hour and his mom couldn't
RH> see why he wanted to quit the job to go back to high school. He'd
RH> started as a water boy in the yard, earning 10 cents an hour. But, he
RH> ended up being the first of his siblings (2 older ones, one younger) to
RH> finish high school and (eventually) graduate from college on the GI
 RH> Bill.

DD> I couldn't wait to get out of high school - mostly because I was bored
DD> out of my mind and I wasn't learning anything new. So, off I went to
DD> the Navy - where I learned electronics theory and practice. But, when
DD> a local community college opened I was among their first students and
DD> learned a lot about things in which I was interested. After a year and
DD> a term in the second year I left that institution by not registering
DD> for classes. That got me a call from the Dean of Students who couldn't
DD> seem to get a grip on my reason for not finishing the year and
DD> graduation. I told him "You don't have any courses in which I am
DD> interested. So, I'll move along to something else." Which caused him
DD> to sputter "But, but, you don't have a degree yet." So, I told him "I
DD> came to learn. Not to pursue a piece of paper. If you have courses in
DD> the future which interest me, I'll be back."

RH> I got a BA right out of high school--parents basically mandated college
RH> for us, I guess partly because of their backgrounds. Haven't worked
RH> much (for pay) in my field but done a lot of volunteer type stuff
RH> that's used it (sociology major, psychology & art minors).

DD> I got my MA in Public Affairs Reporting almost by accident and the
 DD> associate's or bachelor's degree but I did earn a Master's. Go figger.

 RH> I didn't get a MA but did also get a diploma in Women's Studies--some
RH> coourses were almost as intensive as Steve's M Div ones.

That and a couple of bucks will get you a glass of iced tea in most
restaurants. Just like my degree in Public Affairs Reporting. Except that there
are probably more economic opportunities for your line of study than for mine.
Public Affairs Reporting as a profession pays about as well, with as many job
openings as an Art History major finds in his line of evil.

DD> BTW - milk cows do NOT have to be milked at any certain time. Just so
DD> long as they are milked every 12 hours or so. That 4 a.m. and 4 p.m.

RH> Cows don't give anybody a vacation unless help is hired to cover the
RH> milking while the farmer is gone. Even with milking machines there's
RH> still a lot of work to running a dairy farm.

DD> True dat. For any farm - except that there are periods of low activity
 DD> on a modern ca$h grain operation.

RH> Relatively low activity, not actual low activity. Always something to
RH> keep farmers of any type busy.

I know farmers who take a month off and go away with the wife and kidlings
after the crops are in and up. GMOs and Round-up Ready seed has freed up things
like an old-timer (like my grandfather's contemporaries) would not believe.

DD> I do OK for sleep - unless the pain from the osteo-arthritis wakes me
DD> up. Last night was a dandy and I finally had to give in and take a
DD> couple Tramadol to make it lie down so I could finish my nap. I don't
DD> like to take pain killers as I am frightened of becoming habituated to
 DD> them.

RH> I had enough aches & pains that it took me a while to get to sleep.
RH> Seems they don't bother me much during the day but rev up at night when
RH> I want to get to sleep. Actually, they ache some during the day but I'm
RH> busy enough to sort of ignore it.

DD> During the day the arthritis pains tend to be a dull ache which is a
DD> background PITA. And when I am tired I can usually get some sleep
DD> before be wakened by the hip or shoulder pains. Usually scrooching
DD> around to a different position in the bed can let me go back to sleep
 DD> ... if fitfully.

RH> Old age ain't for sissys!

I know. I can hardly wait until I'm old.

RH> Yes, we each cook to our own tastes. Found out a couple of Logan's
RH> favorite foods are rice and cheese.
