ML>> I'm more apprehensive about South America because of its
ML>> generally lousy safety record than I would be about Asia
 ML>> and the middle east.
NB>> Yes, that would be another thing to worry about...
ML> I'm not going to go cuckoo over it though. Speaking of

One wouldn't go anywhere, if things to worry about were the prime
consideration, after all... ;)

ML> cuckoo in so many ways, I'm meeting Lilli in St. Louis
ML> (she read an article in the Huffing and Puffington Post
ML> about how wonderful it is, so that's what's substituting
ML> for the scratched Toronto trip - great for me, as it's

Meet me in st louis, louie... sorry... (G) the fair's gone too, I
understand... ;) I recently passed up an opportunity to go there,
actually... last year's National Genealogy Society conference was held
there... this year's (which I'm also passing up, same reason, lack of
time energy and funds) is being held in Richmond VA... :)

ML> cheaper and more convenient). Owing to the availability
ML> of cheap upgradeable fares, I am coming into Terminal 1,
ML> pier A, and she is coming in some hours later into the
ML> same terminal, pier C. Pier A has noplace to wait to
ML> speak of; pier C has the Schlafly bar and the club. You
ML> have to exit security and then re-enter security. So I
ML> asked the club to prepare a gate pass for me in advance,
ML> so I could meet her and take care of her luggage and so
ML> on. They said it was impossible. Now (this is no big
ML> secret) the TSA regulations say that if you have a
ML> club membership, you can go through security to go there,
ML> and if you are meeting an elderly or infirm friend or
ML> relative, likewise. But the friendly new American Airlines
 ML> does not allow this.

The latter I've done... both seeing them off and collecting them... with
just a gate pass from the ticket counter.... I didn't know about the
club exception, but that makes sense, too... :)

ML> So I will have to buy a refundable ticket to go through
ML> security and then go to the club and have it refunded.

How silly... ;0

ML> Nuts thing 1: planning one's itinerary based on the
ML> Huffington Post and the availability of upgrade space.
ML> Nuts thing 2: the airline not obeying its own and the TSA's
ML> rules. Nuts thing 3: I'm willing to put up with all this crap.

Indeed. ;) 1a and 2 seem the most nuts to me... especially 2...

ML> Even if one were apprehensive, the chances are vanishingly
ML> small. That doesn't stop people from having awful thoughts:
ML> I've been afraid of subway accidents such as the one at
ML> O'Hare the other day, despite the fact that I've never in
ML> 45 years of riding them been within ten miles of an accident.

And then the thinking is, as long as I never go there, I won't have a
chance of ending up as a statistic... ;) One might have a higher
likelihood of being in an auto accident... but, in years of driving
here, and going through intersections that have a rep for having such, I
rarely even see an accident in progress or having just occurred, let
alone be a part of it. I know they happen, and in some cases, I can
even easily imagine how it happens, but I'm not letting it bother me, or
change my regular routes... It might make me just a smitch more cautious
some places, to be sure... ;)

ML>> I think it might be that pistachios are not as
ML>> fully roasted, so their brownness isn't complete, so I am
ML>> looking more for the oily pistachioness than that nuttiness
ML>> I expect in other nuts. Does that make sense?
NB>> Somewhat... :) And that could be a factor... I find that coarsely
NB>> chopped and enough quantity will let that pistachioness come through
 NB>> still for me...
ML> For me the flavor changes, and instead of the oily buttery
ML> quality you get sand and shards.

Hmmm... might depend on the usage...

NB>> Maybe it's partly a sight thing... one sees the
NB>> bits of green nuts, and thus is then primed to taste them...?
ML> But then I'm not all that visual.

Point. :)

NB>> For me the food is more important than
NB>> the atmosphere, which seemed to be her biggest quibble...
ML> Depends on the reason for the visit. If you want to enjoy
ML> the food, you focus on the food. If you want to enjoy both
ML> food and the atmosphere, go to a place with good both. If
ML> atmosphere is all you want, you're (sigh) nuts.

Yup. ;)

NB>> and too much cigarette smoke smell is a distinct turn-off for me...
ML> In recent days, only seldom have I been in places that allow
ML> smoking. Even in Turkey and Thailand indoor smoking is
ML> beginning to be frowned upon..

They're conforming, too...? Not a trend I'm at all unhappy with, of
course, personally... although I know some that would be (or at least
used to be) upset by the trend... :)

ML>> A rocky relationship at first, but three power supplies and a
ML>> keyboard later, I appreciate the fact that in 40 round the world
ML>> equivalents and numerous droppages and squashages, it keeps
ML>> running, though not always well.
NB>> As long as it mostly works, that's something... ;)
ML> Although I heard the fan laboring today and thought, it's
 ML> time for a backup.

A timely backup is a good thing... :)
