NB> Cheese was for sandwiches... :) Or for putting on saltines and
NB> toasted in the open toaster for part of Sunday supper.

When I got married (1966) store-brand/generic boxed Mac & Cheese(oid) was 10c a
box at the local Eisner's or Kroger. One box would feed two people. And with
the addition of a pound of hamburger or can of tuna it became a real treat.
Then a can of cream of mushroom (also generic/store brand) could move the
hamburger laced M&C into budget-gourmet status. Still, if you had 10 people to
feed 5 boxes of store brand could feed 'em ... and with a bit of garlic salt
and some pepper would have been pretty good.

NB> Good deal. :) Interestingly, many of my siblings ended up putting in
NB> some sort of veggie (and flower) garden, once they were off on their

Now that I'm older - I realise that I was let slide on rent of the land, use of
the equipment, and the push cart, etc. Still, it was a good deal. And since it
was a ca$h business - no taxes paid. And no nosy-Parkers from the health
department (which didn't even exist in that time and place). The main reason
that it flew so well was that in that era most women did not work outside the
home. Today a push-cart peddler as I was would get plenty of exercise, probably
harrassed by the busies (cops), and not much else - including money.

NB> I remember that when we lived in the Philly area, the backyard already

And you allergic to apples. Or did that develop later in your life?

DD> So, I got tomatoes fresh from the vine, corn, green beans, peas,
DD> asparagus, berries of several sorts, May apples, turnips and potatoes
DD> that I dug myself, carrots, radishes (red globe and white "icicle"),
DD> watermelons, cantaloupe, and four or five varieties of squash

NB> Nice selection. :) Tomatoes and a (turned out to be futile) try at
NB> rhubarb was as far as I ever got with edibles on my own. Did a bit
 NB> more flower gardening, though...

IIRC a black walnut tree's roots did for your rhubarb patch. Other than that
sort of thing rhubarb is a very hardy plant.

DD> I also learned that radishes left to go to seed produce some really
 DD> nice, radishy-tasting salad fixins.

 NB> True. :)

DD> Our "Chinese" was from Chun King (very, very similar to LaChoy). And
DD> very, very seldom. The best thing about it was the crispy chow mein
 DD> noodles.

NB> I thought that Chun King and LaChoy were just different names for the
NB> same thing... probably the same company now, if they weren't then. :)
NB> And yes, the best part was the crispy noodles.. :)

Chun King was owned/founded by Jeno Paulucci of Jeno's Pizza Rolls and
Michelina's. My favourite thing about Chun King (other than the noodles) were
the Stan Freberg adverts. Reynolds Metals (RJR/Nabisco) owned it for a while
before selling it to a Singaporean company to help pay the nut on a leveraged
buyout. Eventually they were sold (in the mid-90s) to Hunt-Wesson whose masters
CON-Agra (owners of La Choy) closed down the factories and phased out the
brand. So, you're (sorta) right about La Choy and Chun King being under the
same umbrella.

 DD> Title: Sloppy Jose'

NB> That does look like a mighty tasty varient... :)
