The one from 05 April which closed with "e-mail if you think this is a
possibility,"?

I didn't reply in e-mail because it wasn't/isn't going to be possible to get
loose to meet even a hundred miles from Tin Can Central. I find that with the
commitments I have and my relatively new-found sense of responsibility I need
to plan for things like that well in advance. Gone are the daze of my mis-spent
(some claim) youth when I could just drop what I was doing and wander off on a
new quest or whim.

Sugarfire was mentioned by one person whose take was "don't go there if you're
a diabetic or planning on becoming one." I took it from her comment that the
sauces will put you into sugar shock - and thus left it off the list. Both of
the Q places I listed are in the Soulard District (an old French neighbourhood)
which also houses the oldest Farmer's Market west of the Mississississippi and
the North American headquarters of Anheuser-Busch. Also home to the largest
Mardi-Gras party outside Nawlins.

I really miss to old Gaslight Square area. Last time I was in St. Louis
(several years ago) I wandered down Olive Boulevard and was saddened/sickened
to see a formerly vibrant entertainment district looking like a ghost town -
lacking only tumbleweeds blowing down the centre of the avenue. The buildings,
mostly anointed with gang-banger graffitoes and in extreme decrepitude really
got to me.

Back in the era of which I was talking above my friends and I used to make the
trip to Gaslight at least once a week - to visit the Tiger's Den and eat
knishes at Jack Carl's 2c Plain Deli. And just to stroll the street looking at
other revelers. Good Times, Good Times.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: For 2 Cents - Plain Knishes
 Categories: Pastry, Potatoes, Beef, Vegetables
      Yield: 5 Servings
 
MMMMM---------------------------PASTRY--------------------------------
  1 1/2 c  Flour
    1/2 c  Shortening
    1/2 ts Salt
           Cold water

MMMMM--------------------------FILLING-------------------------------
      2 lg Russet potatoes
      3 cl Garlic; minced
      4    Green onions w/tops; diced
    1/2 tb Coarse black pepper
    3/4 lb Ground beef; cooked, loose
           Parsley
 
  Pastry: Add salt to flour and mix. Work lard and butter into
  flour mix with fork until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle in
  water gradually and mix together until moist enough to form
  soft dough. Turn onto floured surface and work until smooth.
  Cover and refrigerate until filling is prepared.
  
  Filling: Preheat oven to 350øF/175øC. Peel and dice
  potatoes. Add potatoes, garlic and onions together in a
  large pot. Cover with water and boil until potatoes are
  tender. Drain off water and mash together. Add in beef,
  and parsley. Mix together well.
  
  When filling is cool enough to work with take-out pastry and
  separate into 5-6 portions. Roll dough portion out on
  floured surface. Place approximately 1/2 cup filling in
  center of pastry. Seal into a round or square packet using
  egg wash or water.
  
  Place packets on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at
  350øF/175øC until pastry is lightly golden brown.
  
  Yields: 5 knishes
