NB> That last is hard to do with a land-line POTS... no text capability at
NB> all... Most people I'm around now already know my luddite tendencies,
NB> so I get less of the bug-eye takes, though... :)

Working the job that I do I work mostly with folk who are younger than I. And
they seem to use their mobile devices as some sort of security blanket. I had a
young guy out on a route for training the other day and his cell phone kept
burping with text messages every few minutes. And he kept reading them until I
told him, finally, "Lose the phone until we are stopped. Those messages will
wait." When he protested I reminded him that company policy was "NO CELL
PHONES" - period. Full Stop. Then I told him that if he wanted to read and
reply to texts on the go or to talk on the phone without a hands-free device to
do it on his own. And not whilst my butt was in the dummy seat. He sort of
pouted, but complied.

DD> Every few days I get an e-mail from someone advising me that they have
DD> dropped their phone service via their cable provider due to
DD> connectivity or other problems. Or that they have dropped their land
DD> line phones altogether. And I wonder whatever prompted them to quit Ma
DD> Bell in favour of $cumCa$t or one of their cousins - who are, after
DD> all, in the entertainment business not the phone business. And/or why
DD> they think that the land line is not a valuable alternative means of
 DD> communication.

NB> They fell prey to the insidious adverts... ;) But didn't learn from
NB> the experience to go back to Ma...

We live in a world of perceived realities.

DD> I have a cell phone for my personal convenience. I also have kept my
DD> Ma Bell landline telephone with basic service ... which costs me all of
DD> U$20/month and is handy for making calls in a general power outage as
DD> the TelCo phones are powered independently of the electrical grid -
 DD> unlike the cell towers.

NB> We've kept our phone service with the phone company... and made sure to
NB> have at least one working corded phone at all times... but it is more
NB> than just basic service, since they are also our ISP, with their DSL...
NB> And again, we also have an alternative dialup ISP (which is where I
NB> keep my email account)... In case of a power outage, of course the
NB> computers wouldn't work anyway (except for Richard's laptop whose
NB> battery works), but we could still call out and get calls in... :)

I have my DSL with AT&T. I also have a dial-up account with them - which came
with the DSL. I've been with them long enough that my servers are listed as
Ameritech.Springfield.IL - before SBC took over and well before it all became
AT&T (again). I think if SBC takes even one more baby-step in acquisitions that
the anti-trust people will do to them what they did to the original AT&T.

DD> I am so anti "social media" and so-called "connectivity improvements"
DD> that I am considering asking Swisher for an e-mail account with
 DD> luddites.org.

NB> That does have a certain amount of appeal to it... ;)

Except I already own my own domain - with a hundred or so available e-mail
accounts. Bv)=

      Title: Lord Grey's Peach Preserves
Categories: Five, Fruits, Condiments, Preserving, Citrus
      Yield: 2 servings

      5 lb Ripe peaches
      4 c Sugar
      2 tb Fresh lemon juice
5 Earl Grey tea bags; divided

Cut a small, shallow X in the bottom of each peach.
Working in batches, blanch in a large pot of boiling water
until skin loosens, about 1 minute. Transfer to a large
bowl of ice water; let cool. Peel, halve, and pit. Cut
into 1/3" slices. Combine with sugar and juice in a large
bowl. Let stand for 30 minutes.

Place a small plate in freezer. Transfer fruit mixture and
4 tea bags to a large heavy pot. Open the remaining tea
bag; crumble leaves slightly; add to pot. Bring to a boil,
stirring gently, and cook 15-20 minutes. Test doneness by
scooping a small spoonful onto chilled plate and tilting
plate. (Preserves are ready if they don't run.) Remove tea
bags. Skim foam from the surface of jam. Ladle jam into 2
clean, hot 1-pint jars. Wipe rims, seal, and process in a
boiling water bath for 10 minutes.
