DD> We are headed for a ca$hle$$ society. But, we'll never get there.
DD> There will always be ca$h or the equivalent in easily portable valuata
DD> - else how would one bribe a politician or copper?

NB> Such a cynical take... ;) There's also all those waitstaff that need
 NB> tips... ;)

I think of it as realistic. And whilst I prefer to tip in ca$h and let the
tipped one make up whatever story they think the tax man will believe - one can
add a tip to the plastic. But, that leaves a paper trail and I don't wish to
make the IRS's job any easier than I have to.

DD>> No one but a degenerate gambler plays the slots anyway as they are
 DD>> a mugg's game - like most casino stuff.

NB>> Which is, among other reasons, why I just totally avoid the whole
NB>> scene... I've known a few people that both enjoy the gambling and are
NB>> able to keep it sane... generally by only gambling with a set amount of
NB>> set-aside money, and when that's used, that's it. Our gambling has
NB>> been more on the line of lending people money... same basic rule, only
NB>> lend (or gamble with) what you can afford to lose... :)

 DD> I never was a gambler. I might try a flutter at a game of chance -
DD> but, like you, I had my self-imposed limit and when that was hit - I
 DD> was done.

NB> I think my point was slightly missed... the "gambling" we've done has
NB> been the lending of money to people in need... :) But if I ever did
NB> try my hand at gambling, it would be like you and like those I
NB> described above, staying within a self-imposed limit...

I saw that - just didn't realise it was the main thrust of your comment. I
sometimes loan small amounts to people I don't really like. If they can't/don't
pay it back they tend to avoid me. And that's worth the investment - most
imes.

DD> I also would sometimes pocket the original stake (if I won early)
DD> and play on the house's money. And not bring out the original stake
 DD> ever again that trip.

NB> That would work out nicely, too... :)

DD> I did play bridge, pinochle and poker for money. But those are games
DD> of skill rather than games of pure chance - like roulette or slot
 DD> machines or video poker.

NB> I've not done even that... mostly just from lack of inclination rather
 NB> than on principle... :)

Well, the cards for $$$ (other than poker) were mostly in the service or at
college. And I forgot to include hearts in that mix. Cut-throat hearts for
10c/point keeps an afternoon moving right along.

NB>> Maybe... I know lots of people who just hate to carry any sort of
NB>> change... and the dollar coins are heavier yet...

DD> I know of at least one merchant who is doing a Don Quixote on this.
DD> He does not give out paper dollars in change, uses a lot of two dollar
DD> bills, and does not do pennies - rounding to the nearest nickel. His
 DD> change bins in the ca$h drawer are 5c - 10c- 25c - 50c - $1. The bills
 DD> are $2 - $5 - $10 - $20 - $50.

 NB> That's different, to be sure... :)

It gets him talked about - almost like free advertising.

DD> And his clerks have to know how to count change back to the customer
DD> as the registers don't understand his system. Bv)=

NB> A useful skill, anyway... :) Doesn't hurt to force them to learn it.

They used to teach that in third grade when I went to school. Now - if the cash
register doesn't tell the child running it how much change to give back they
are lost in how to make change. Seriously lost.

NB>> There's little incentive to earn it if you get it anyway... There are
NB>> plenty of places we can go, so it's no hardship to avoid the ones that
NB>> don't serve good food, with or without good service... ;0

DD> I have been known to march right out of places that note the gratuity
DD> is added to the cheque automatically. Or places with prominent "NO
DD> TIPPING" signs displayed. My experience has been that the service and
DD> often the food in such places sucks rocks.

NB> Depending on whom I was with, I might or might not do the same thing.
NB> A new place I Might give One chance... ;) Most places I'm inclined
NB> to try aren't the sort that would be doing the auto-gratuity anyway...

Well, me too. I've also been known to tip the kitchen if I have a special
request that comes out right (or at least close enough for gummint work).

NB> ... Murphy's Philosophy: smile -- tomorrow will be worse.

So, I smiled. And sure as hell .........

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Mother Murphy's Barbequed Rice
Categories: Beef, Poultry, Pork, Bbq, Rice
      Yield: 4 Servings

      1 ts Cooking oil
8 oz Meat; in strips, (beef,
           - pork, chicken, or other)
      2 oz Black olives
      2 oz Green olives; w/pimento
      6 lg Mushrooms; sliced
           +=OR=+
      4 oz Can sliced mushrooms
      8 oz Can tomato sauce
2 oz Store bought BBQ sauce
      1 c Rice
      2 c Water
  1 1/2 tb Butter

Begin by preparing rice, bringing to a rolling boil in
water, then covering and cooking on low for 15 minutes
(more or less). Stir in butter until melted.

About half-way through the 15 minutes, begin the sauce.
Brown meat in oil. Combine all other ingredients with
meat, let simmer 10 minutes. Serve over rice.

The meat may be flavored while cooking with garlic or
other spices to taste. It is not recommended that any
spices be added to the sauce with the other ingredients
after the meat is cooked. No additional salt should be
added, as there is plenty in the green olives.
