I've posted here and elsewhere that I am frequently
suspicious of the true motivation of humor, as it is
so close to awful things.

Funny thing the other day. I'm in seat 10A on the 319,
the poor man's first class and a secret hiding place of
mine, with the row to myself, and right at the end, last
to board is this peculiar guy about my age who plops down
in 10C (10B remaining empty). We exchange pleasantries,
and eventually the flight attendant came by to give the
exit row briefing, pointing out, in that slightly officious
way that they do, that she needed to hear a verbal "yes" to
the question "are you willing and able to assist in case of
an emergency?" So the girl in 9C says yes, and I say yes,
and this guy nods, which prompts this exchange:

- I need a verbal response.
- What am I supposed to say?
- Say yes. [exasperated]
- Say yes. [with a smirk]*

* This is a meaningless and silly response, because she did
not tell him "Say 'Say yes.'"

I took it on myself to give him a little lecture on how
the airline has its little protocol, and it's best to
play along, whereupon no more pleasantries were exchanged,
and he spoke no more to me nor to anyone else, choosing to
sulk for the duration of the flight.

Ah.

 and a realization that

Seems that way. I wish I knew more about it.

Actually, Felix Krull is a variation on a theme by Goethe by
Thomas Mann. I tongue-tied myself, which is happening with
frequency these days.

Indeed. And inside every confident success hides a neurotic
failure trying to hide confidence trying to hide failure,
like an infinite Matryozhki doll.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Chrov Pilov
 Categories: Asian, Sidedish, Kazakh, Vegetable, Ethnic
      Yield: 4 Servings

      1 c  Rice uncooked
    1/4 c  Chopped almonds
      2 tb Currants
      2 tb Raisins
      6    Prunes dried, pitted, &
           -coarsely chopped
      3 tb Dates chopped
      4 tb Butter
    1/4 c  Apricots, dried, pitted &
           - cut into strips 1/4"x1"
      1 tb Honey
      2 c  Cold water

  Soak, dates, currants, & prunes in a bowl of warm water for 15
  minutes. Then remove them, pat dry, and mix with the other dried
  fruits. Mel the butter in a large, heavy skillet over High heat. Add
  the fruit mixture and the almonds. Reduce the heat to Low and stir
  for 4 minutes, Stir in the honey, rice, and water. Raise heat to High
  and bring to a boil, reduce heat to Low, cover and simmer for 25
  minutes. Serve hot.
