NB>> some bread and butter to go with... Applesauce to go alongside, too.

RH> We would have had the applesauce for dessert. The French or Italian

Applesauce was considered a "salad" fruit. Ice cream was dessert... ;)

RH> bread was an inexpensive enough splurge to go with cheap white (store
RH> brand or Mueller's) pasta. Other than that, my folks bought the
RH> inexpensive white sandwich ("balloon bread" according to Dr. David
RH> Ruben) locally. Once they got a stand alone freezer (when I was in
RH> college) they would get bread at the day old shops in Kingston or
RH> Oneonta if they were there for other purposes.

I suspect my father didn't much like white bread himself... so it wasn't
the only (or even the most common) bread in our house. Whole wheat,
pumpernickle, raisin, are what I remember best. Later in life, they got
hooked on Ezekial bread... :)

RH> Other than spaghetti nights, the only other times bread was on the
RH> supper table was to go under beef stew or chili.

We didn't usually have it on the table either... sometimes to go with
stew, though... It was more for sandwiches, and toast, and Sunday
breakfast in the car... ;)

RH>> This was the boxed stuff you mixed up. The box came with the dry dough
RH>> stuff, a small can of sauce and a small packet of grated cheese.
RH>> Stretching the pizza dough out so it would feed 7 of us, they ended up
RH>> being thin crust; I don't think I ever had a thick crust pizza until I
 RH>> went to college.
NB>> I'd seen that in the store... but I'm pretty sure we never had that...
NB>> probably because we'd have needed an extra box to feed the 10 of us,
NB>> and I bet it never went on sale... ;)

RH> My mom bought 2 boxes; it made enough to give us each 2 pieces. My MIL
RH> would make up several boxes or use the bagged bread mix (don't know
RH> the name) to make several pizzas for the family (7, like ours).

In that case, it probably would have taken 4 boxes... we were feeding
10... and I'm sure that Daddy would have thought it a needless
extravagance... we didn't get the boxed mac and cheese, either...

RH>>> could call them "interesting" but nothing beats a good home made
 RH>>> lasagne.
NB>>> Hard to beat anything good home-made, actually.. :) Except
NB>>> maybe some really fancy-dancy cookery by chefs that know what
NB>>> they are about and come through... :)
RH>> I don't think I've encountered any of those in the commercial line,
RH>> but we don't buy lasagne, we make it.
NB>> I was thinking more restaurant fare, not buy-in-store-to-bring-home
 NB>> type...

RH> OK, I've had some decent restaurant ones but most anything beats what
RH> my mom made. (G) Most times tho, when we go out for Italian food, we
RH> don't get lasagne; we go for something I usually don't make.

Makes sense.... (G)

RH>> $65./each, $20. more if you want the wine pairings with the meal (we
RH>> wouldn't but can't afford that much money for the basic meal).
NB>> That's pretty steep. Is it a benefit of some sort as well...?

RH> Basically just to raise awareness of the market & what's offered.
RH> Market manager said most places would charge about twice that so she
RH> thought it was reasonable. We could afford that if it were for the 2 of
RH> us, but not per person, so we'll cook for ourselves, using some market
 RH> produce.

Places that would charge twice that, we'd not likely even think once
about going to... but then we've been on pretty tight budgets usually.
Actually, places that would charge that much per person are pretty much
out of reach as well.. :) Fortunately, we do seem to have a knack for
finding places that are inexpensive and great food... :)
