Ärende: the puttering age 541
=============================
Hi Michael,

RH> Steve got his 486 in 1997 when he came home from Korea.

ML> That was a bit late for a 486, but then it's plenty of
ML> power for just about anything if it weren't for all these
 ML> pesky graphics and animations.

We had to get what we could afford, when we could afford it. Raising 2
kids, at that time getting ready to marry one off--all add up.

RH> I guess we were a bit slower than most on upgrading computers.

ML> Yeah: I'm generally behind the times myself but by that
 ML> time had a Pentium, albeit a low-budget one.

We got what we could afford at the time. One income, enlisted person
meant we didn't get the latest/greatest until it was well out of that
category. It also meant a lot of budget stretching meals--lots of
chicken, ground beef (or turkey--it was cheaper), pasta, etc.

RH> I know my heavier duty battery pack lasts for a good long while but
RH> the lighter duty one is only good for a few hours.

ML> I don't have the luxury of two battery packs - one of the
ML> drawbacks of being on the trailing edge is that all the
ML> replacements and peripherals are out of production by the
ML> time I figure out I need them.

Steve has done a lot of "horse trading"--when he works on a computer for
someone else, he asks what is to be done with extra parts (RAM, drives,
batteries, etc). If he's told that they're of no use, he will ask if he
can have them...........and then upgrade his system, trickling down
parts from his to mine, etc.

RH> I made a big change almost 40 years ago switching from white flour,
RH> rice, etc to whole wheat, brown rice, etc.

ML> But then the extra-sweetness crept in anyway. Can't win,
 ML> I suppose.

The sweet tooth didn't help matters. At this stage, I suspect most
doctors would say I'm more "pre diabetic" since it's so well controlled.

RH> That's why I try to find a doctor who's willing to talk with me, not
 RH> at me.

ML> Good plan. Finding one who isn't a puffed-up brat is
 ML> pretty difficult.

Just have to know where to look. Ask friends for references, make an
appointment saying you're "looking for a new doctor, here's what I want"
type and see what kind of reception you get.

ML> That's pretty much all that's in the house.
RH> Not even a can of tuna fish or a carton of eggs?

ML> That's the impression I was trying to convey. The place
ML> is a wasteland, and if I replenish, it disappears almost
ML> instantaneously, as though the plague of locusts went
 ML> through.

ML> Anyhow, I can't cook there, because there's no room
ML> from the dirty dishes and pots and pans. Sadly, my
ML> brother requested, or rather, he said he'd very much
ML> like it if I cooked for him, and I told him that was
ML> not possible, as there wasn't enough surface to chop
ML> an onion, much less do anything else; and the kitchen
ML> table (used for eating) had about a 2" strip cleared
ML> where he could hardly balance a place setting, even
ML> if he pushed all the crap away. He very distressedly
ML> said that he had just cleaned up in anticipation of
ML> my being there! - and seemed to be quite sincere
ML> about this. The level of derangement of the boy
 ML> is astonishing.

Need a bomb set off in that place?
