So more like a regular store out on the economy? The rare
occasions when I've seen PXs and the like they seemed a little
stripped down, but this was mostly in the '50s, when sometimes
a carpool schedule would go awry and some kid's mom would have
to run errands: I was of course in the single digits and didn't
quite understand the concept of military ID, and I cringed
going past every guard post because technically I wasn't
entitled to be there. I was a little literalist in those days.

I suppose. I do that at restaurants, then subsist on small
amounts of chocolate for long periods of time (it used to
be half a box of vermicelli a day back when I spent 75% of
my earnings on the apartment).

That's the important thing.

For lengthy low to medium heat cooking, heavy ones are good.
For the kind of cooking I do, as light and flimsy as possible
is best, and it confuses Annie that my favorite pan in her
house is a $2 no-name thing, and I use her fancy Viking stuff
only as backup and the Calphalon and even fancier equipment
not at all.

Most sensible people work that way. If I can't get the
quality I need, I don't get, making do with a substitute
or going without altogether.

yield: 1 batch

2 Tb cornmeal mix
1 egg
2 Tb self rising flour
buttermilk
2 Tb sugar
chopped onion
1/2 ts baking powder

Set 10 min before cooking. Drop teaspoonsful into hot
grease.
