A good idea - as with the green Mcshake and the McRib, there
is a substantial novelty and curiosity value, plus a few
true believers who won't be satisfied until there's a reissue.
Anyhow, the Double Down was, for KFC, not altogether bad.

I like them better than I'd like the ingredients separately,
but to me moussaka made with potatoes is an abomination. It
should be eggplant, red gravy, bechamel, and lots of MEAT.

I sniff at people who load up on bread and rubber noodles
when there are lovely protein foods to be had; on the other
hand I've been known to pay six-pack prices for a single
beer at a bar.

Must be under copyright. Okay, here's what I remember.

There's this Evergreen Society made up of people who have
been altered to be immune to all disease and degeneration
so they live preternaturally long lives, though they are
still subject to trauma, and each year they gather someplace
to have a banquet, at which at some point a picture of
Asimov is projected on a screen and people throw bread at
it (this is the only really stupid part of the story and
is obviously an in-joke). Which reminds me that some
people have a grilled sirloin sandwich every Mardi Gras:
it's a ritual bunning of the steak.

At this particular meeting there is an assassination
attempt, plus the first man to be be altered shows up,
and when he's noticed, all the people get up and chant
"Who led the way? George [Gray or Cray or something].

Other bits I recall:

Mortals are called "mayflies" by their privileged superiors.

There's actually a secret race of immortals who have
dispersed all over the world and occasionally use this
occasion to meet clandestinely, working as catering help.

Chicken Cacciatore
cat: Singapore, Italian, main
servings: 4

olive oil
1 kg chicken thighs (any other parts)
salt
1 lg onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 capsicum (green, red or yellow, up to you)
400 g mushrooms (any type)
1 c dry white wine (chicken stock is a viable substitute)
1 cn diced tomatoes (M says - looks like what's intended
- is 28 oz, but he'd use half)
1 bay leaf
1/2 ts thyme
crushed red pepper flakes

Heat olive oil in pan, and brown chicken that's been
seasoned with salt. Remove from heat and set aside.

Using the chicken fat-infused oil, fry onions and garlic
until fragrant and onions translucent.

Add capsicums, and fry for a couple of minutes till just
softened. Add mushrooms and cook 1 min.

Add wine, tomatoes, and juice.

Return chicken to pan.

Add bay leaf and thyme, and lower heat to let the
chicken cook 30 min. If you prefer a fall-off-the-bone
texture, simmer for 40 min on medium heat.

The liquid should be reduced to 1/2 its starting amount
into a rich thick-ish gravy. Salt to taste, add a pinch
of red pepper flakes (depending on how spicy you'd like
the stew) and serve.

Variations: Add about 8 capers for a salty tang. And/or
add oregano for a more layered herby taste.
