 -> -> But that is less likely to produce the stretched families where the
 ->  -> uncle/aunt is younger than the niece/nephews
 -> RH> The exact opposite can be true. A friend just adopted her own
 ->  RH> granddaughter.
 -> That just messes up the lineage on its own... (G) That's how one gets
 -> to be their own grandpaw... (G)
 ->
 RH> Something like that. Then again a friend has twin sons who are only
 RH> about a year older than his oldest grandkid. The parents got married
 RH> at 19 and 20 respectively.

That was close... the grandkid could have been older than the youngest
twins... (G)

 RH> I won't even bring in the late Tony Randall. He got married a second
 RH> time in his 70s to a much younger woman. There weren't any kids with
 RH> wife #1 though, so it didn't get as weird as it could have.

Second (and subsequent) marriages and steps definitely change the
playing field...  (G)

 -> -> their respective jobs better... but don't last near so long as
 ->  -> their clunkier predecessors...  ;)
 -> RH> The clunkers ran forever. The stove we sold with my grandmother's
 -> RH> house may STILL be there - 1930s gas. The ones from the 50s lasted
 ->  RH> lasted a long time too.
 -> We are still using a stove from the 50's (GE)... came with the house,
 -> and hasn't died yet... Had to replace the element for the bake unit in
 -> the oven, multiple times even, but it's working fine now, as are at
 -> least two of the four burners of the stove. And so far the pushbuttons
 -> haven't broken either... I keep thinking that something irreplaceable
 -> will go, but so far, not at all... :)

 RH> I personally wouldn't call being down to two burners still working,
 RH> but that's just me.

I only know of one burner that doesn't work anymore... it was the one
that lowered into a hole so one could do deep-frying more easily... The
other back burner I just haven't tried for ages, maybe it still works,
but I've not needed to have more than two in use at any one time...
usually only one... so maybe there's 3 out of 4 working... ;)

 RH> Also my antipathy for electric stoves.

They have their pluses and minuses, as do gas stoves... I'm fine with
either... and will miss the other, for some things... ;)

 RH> We had a pushbutton one early on. After the buttons died for the
 RH> second time and we couldn't get replacements, we went to gas.

We've been expecting the pushbuttons to die for decades... so far they
are working just fine... (G) I expect that when they do, we won't be
able to find replacements...

 RH> That croaked a few years
 RH> ago too, so in went a new gas cook top. Nothing fancy, but it works.

Works is what counts... fancy is as fancy does... ;)

 -> RH> OTOH I had a dishwasher that died in a hair over a year. The new
 -> RH> stuff can do more; the old stuff was sturdier.
 -> The fridge that came with the house when we bought it, almost 40 years
 -> ago, died shortly after we moved in... it was the same vintage as the
 -> stove, I think... We got an Amana that lasted about 35 years, so only
 -> recently bit the dust... When we went to replace it, we were told by
 -> the salesman at the appliance store not to expect the new one to live
 -> anywhere near so long... rather dismaying... I think we may have made

 RH> They say about ten years if you're lucky.

That sounds about right... we're hoping, of course, for VERY lucky...
and having it last longer... ;)

 -> choices that could enhance its chances for a longer life, got it without
 -> any of the bells and whistles, ie, no ice cube maker, no water or ice
 -> dispensers, etc... Just a top freezer and a refrigerator with shelves
 -> and drawers... :)

 RH> That's what we did. The lower end models tend to last longer.

Exactly...  :)

 -> We haven't used it in forever, but I think that the ancient 50's
 -> GE dishwasher that also came with the house still works... it's a
 -> portable, and needs to be hooked up to a sink... which is part of why
 -> it hasn't been used in yonks... :)

 RH> Mine's a built-in. We're on our fourth one. The one that came in the

We'd have to re-think the kitchen to get one built in now...

 RH> house died shortly after my parents moved in. My mom got a new one,
 RH> that worked, in the early 70s and it lasted 30 years and change. The
 RH> replacement lasted a whole year before needing a major repair that
 RH> also failed. It was a fancy one. The cheap-o replacement she bought
 RH> after that one died is still going fine.

Go figure... :) As we were saying, the lower end models are more
likely to last... :)
