NB>> Blonde's a state of mind, not a color of hair
ML> Yeah, something like that. I have a friend who signs her
 ML> e-mails "sent by a smart blonde from a dumb phone";
ML> I don't know how dumb her phone is, but is truly both
ML> smart and blonde. And bizarrely beautiful, as in if
ML> you tell a teenage girl to draw a picture of a princess,
 ML> she looks like that.

Hardly fair, almost... :) Has a sense of humor, too.... :)

ML>> blanch the broccoli first (strongly preferring a mild
ML>> crunch to the splintery one that raw vegetable provides)
NB>> It also can make it a little more digestible...
ML> Aside from the fartiferousness, which cooking doesn't
ML> do a whole lot for, indigestibility isn't that important
ML> to most of us, who get an overplus of nutrients.

I was thinking about my own issues with the raw broccoli, not always
wanting to stay down... just a burp-back, but nicer if it doesn't...
blanched generally is nicer... ;)

NB>>> Laughing at others is usually cruel... laughing with others
NB>>> usually not so... Poking fun at others, making them the butt
NB>>> of jokes, I find just wrong, and mean...
ML>> I don't see the point. Or rather, I do too keenly, having
ML>> periodically attracted that kind of attention.
NB>> Likewise... or seen it directed at friends of mine...
ML> Some people make the distinction of "laughing with" vs.
ML> "laughing at" - I'm a bit leery of that as well, and when
ML> someone says "we're not laughing at you, we're laughing
ML> with you," it's likely they deserve to be filleted.

There is a real distinction... but, I'll also agree that there are too
many who pay lipservice, but are more likely laughing at not with... if
one HAS to make the comment, chances are that it isn't quite so pure as
they claim...

ML>> Problem with gentle humor is that it is so often not so
ML>> gentle as it pretends to be - or that it can be taken
 ML>> as not so gentle.
NB>> Truly gentle humor takes into account how it is being received
ML> Another subtheme is that truly gentle humor is relatively
 ML> rare.

Probably true, and unfortunately so...

NB>> Our local community colleges are taking over some of the
NB>> professional training... Monroe CC has one of the good nursing
NB>> programs locally, along with UR and Roberts Wesleyan...
ML> Interesting. Community colleges I thought were mostly
ML> stuck at the associate level of degree granting.

That still is true... associate degrees and certification programs.
Nurses in the MCC program come out with an RN, and can go for the
testing for the full certification. If they want a BSN, there are
programs where one can transfer then to Roberts... One of my nieces has
her BSN from Roberts, and then went on to get her MSN as a Nurse
Practitioner later (not sure where).... A young friend of mine, Xian,
got her RN from MCC, and is presently working as an RN at Rochester
General on the cardiac ward... she's been considering going on for her
BSN, but it isn't necessary to function fully as an RN.

Just to confuse the issue, NY state has the SUNY system, which is
somewhat of a hybrid between the community colleges and the full
universities... they offer the full range of degrees, at least thru
the masters level...

ML> Yesterday I went to the MGH (Massachusetts General
ML> Hospital) IHP (Institute of Health Professions)
ML> graduation to watch a young friend get a nursing
ML> degree, of which it turns out there are many types,
ML> including several flavors of doctorates and master's
ML> degrees as well as the BSN. This professionalization
ML> (perhaps hyperprofessionalization) of the field is a
ML> bit foreign to me, as when I was growing up, few RNs
ML> had even a bachelor's. This seems to be a contrast
ML> to the situation you seem to depict in social work.

Probably has something to do with the history of the different
fields.... Nursing started out more as an apprenticeship... Social
Work, as a field, was a specialization at the higher levels of
education... one used to have to have an MSW in order to take the
certifiacation testing for CSW... There are still very few BSW programs,
and I'm not surprised that RIT decided to go that way when it opened the
program, back when I was in school, and finally found a way to get my
bachelors degree... ;) It turned out to be a very successful program,
especially as an interdisciplinary program with NTID, with many of the
Deaf students finding it a good fit for them... Which made RIT's
decision to scrap the program all the more baffling to those of us in
and from the program... The suspicion was that the numbers got skewed
just because it was a shared program, so the benefit seemed to be more
for NTID and less for the program itself... but it wasn't kept at all.

ML>> (dorm resident) freshman year was fascinated by this
ML>> phenomenon and being a historian researched stories of the
ML>> glory days when just having an ID ("bursar's card" up through
ML>> my years there) bearing the illustrious name guaranteed an
ML>> instant line of credit in places as far away as New York.
NB>> I can see why the proctor was fascinated by that... :)
ML> People go to Harvard for various reasons, some good, mostly
ML> the obvious ones, some bad, including the fascination with
ML> the name and the culture, "because I can," or, in my case,
ML> because it was the culmination of my parents' ambitions.

Pretty typical... Parental ambitions have a way of backfiring...
although it doesn't have to be totally bad... :)

ML> Also it was the only place that would give me substantial
ML> financial aid. Turns out to have been a lousy investment for
ML> them, but, hey, nobody's perfect.

Substantial financial aid helps... :) As to how lousy an investment,
what were they expecting to get out of it...? ;) Not every one will
be a star, no matter what the field.
