====================================================================
Hi Dave,

DD> There used to be four fairly major stupormarkups in the area. A Jewel,
DD> A National, two family-owned independents as well as a selection of
DD> "neighbourhood" Mom & Pop groceries. The National, which was the
DD> anchor store of the strip mall just to the south of the current Hy-Vee
DD> location was the last to go - over 10 years ago. So the area has been
DD> pretty starved for a stupormarkup anyway. I anticipate that they will
DD> do well. As do their bean counters else they'd not have come to the area.

RH> Not quite a food desert but getting close? At least you won't have to
RH> go very far before or after work, should you wish to pick something up.

DD> They have a "casual dining" restaurant inside called the "Marketplace
DD> Grille" which some of the staff at my Auto Zone have tried out. They
DD> used to skip across the street the other direction to the Walgreen's
DD> store for snack items, etc. Now they can go to Hy-Vee for that sort of
DD> thing or for a sandwich or other edibles.

So, you're learning bits and pieces about it. Next thing you know,
you'll be telling them to bring you back something for your lunch after
they finish theirs. You'll report on that as a start, working your way
into going over and doing some grocery shopping & reporting on it.

DD> I'll probably check out the restaurant before I try out the grocery
DD> aisles. I'll let you know.

Basically, about what I figured. (G)

DD> Depends on how far "out-of-route" I have to go. I'm not one of those
DD> who will drive to the next town to save $5 on a tank of fuel and burn
DD> two to three gallons of $3.00 (or more) gasoline getting there and
DD> back. If I have a reason for going there other than just for the cheap
 DD> gasoline ....... that's a different deal. Nothing wrong with a bargain
 DD> on my planet. Bv)=

RH> He went up there to renew his driver's license. Beats the crowds at the
RH> DMVs in Raleigh and has a fairly scenic drive in the deal. Gas prices
RH> were good enough to fill up while he was there.

DD> Like I said - if there is a reason for going there then it's not just
 DD> a trip to
DD> save a few farthings per gallon. Even if it doesn't make a lot of
 DD> sense it lets
DD> my mind rest easier. Bv)=

I know, we usually go with Lowe's here in WF. Sometimes, if we're in
Raleigh, we'll fill up there but prices are usually a few cents to the
gallon cheaper up here. We'll also get gas at the little station &
convenience mart around the corner from us, buuilding a working
relationship with the family that owns it.

DD> Sunday you get a coupon for a free car wash. That's not just for

RH> We try not to buy gas on Sundays, unless travelling.

DD> locations between Illinois and Maryland - thinking ahead, as it were.

RH> We just take the luck of the road most times when travelling. Same as
RH> finding meals--and we've found some good ones in least anticipated
 RH> places.

DD> Other than a sad experience with a Denny's on the way home from the
DD> Fly-fest I've had pretty good luck with road food. And once when

One of the best meals we had by happenstance was at a little place in
Alabama a couple of years ago. Stopped to get gas and use facilities,
asked the clerk where a good place to eat was. She directed us to a
place just up the road--it was pushing one pm so there was a long line
of locals waiting to pay up & get back to work. Our meal came with a
choice of 3 sides for the meat, plus choice of breads--and all at a
reasonable price. We both piced fried green tomatoes as one of our
sides.

DD> trying to find a roadside BBQ I had bragged up to my brother and
DD> sister - we found that that stretch of US 90 between Hattiesburg and
DD> Mobile had been 4-laned and the BBQ/Grocery Store was but a memory.
DD> Dang, that was some good Q, too.

Good memories of good food. We found, when we went back to Swansboro in
2007, our favorite seafood place just outside of town was gone. Probably
taken out in one of the hurricanes. Another old favorite was still going
strong so we made sure to get a good meal there while in the area.

DD> The Mobil stations here feature a price that is 10c/gallon lower than
DD> the market - until you read the small print "w/wash". A six or seven

RH> Plus taking the time to go thru the was, especially if there's a line.
RH> Sounds like a deal we can easily forego.

DD> That's another good thing about the Moto-Mart deal. You get a coupon
DD> with a code printed on it which is good for 30 days. You don't have to
DD> wait on line for the wash to be open to you. At the Mobil you must get
DD> the wash and the fuel
DD> on the same trip. Some of the Shell stations just give a dollar off
DD> whichever level of car wash you wish to do - with a minimum 5 gallon
DD> purchase. But, like the Mobil deal - it all has to be on the same
 DD> trip.

Same trip, we can't do while travelling. If we're in a fixed spot for a
few days, we can do the "come back later for the wash" thing.

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
