Hi Dave,

RH> Some places tho, don't bring out hot water; it's warm or tepid. The
RH> place we stayed at Monday night had a free (somewhat decent) breakfast.
RH> I filled my travel cup with "hot" water and a tea bag, was able to
RH> drink the tea before we checked out. Usually that cup keeps it so hot I
RH> can't even sip at it for a couple of hours after filling.

DD> The places where I order hot tea (other than the Chinese venues) all
DD> have a hot water valve on their Bunn-O-Matic coffee brewer which
DD> dispenses hot water at 195øF/91øC to 205øF/96øC.

I've seen it in a lot of places. This place had just a carafe for the
hot water, should have figured it wouldn't be that hot.

DD> You might look into one of those plug-in-the-accessory-outlet travel
DD> mugs - as much as you guys travel. It will keep hot things hot or heat
DD> water for tea, instant soup or coffee. They're not, IIRC, terrifically
 DD> expensive, either.

Might give it some consideration. It would let us make up something hot
while on the road for a quick cold weather meal. Usually the hot drink
we get in the morning lasts until afternoon but sometimes it would be
nice to have something like soup or ramen noodles for lunch.

DD> for "sweet" tea. Why don't they just eat right from the sugar bowl and
DD> not have to hide the flavour of the beverage.

RH> I like it sweet, but not "tooth itching" sweet. One local bbq chain
RH> makes their sweet tea so sweet I had to ask for half and half before I
RH> cut out the sugar. Now I either get a diet soft drink or go for the
RH> unsweet only and add stevia. It was, a major shock however, to go from
RH> sweet tea served automatically in NC to unsweet tea served likewise in
RH> AZ and TX. Thought the latter state would serve it sweet but they bend
RH> more to the "everywhere but the south, tea is served unsweet" camp.

DD> Sweet tea in the south is like grits - you can't escape it. I've tried

Just part of the culture. BTW, we've been following the tracking on the
hurricane--it's headed right for the area we used to live. The area we
live in now will get wet but not like the coast.

RH> There's various levels of sweet tea, all depends on where you get it. I
RH> had no problems with it some places but ended up having to cut it at
 RH> Smithfield's.

DD> I just as soon put my own additives in - if I'm not going with the
 DD> "straight-up" brew.

I try to keep some stevia packets on hand to add to mine. not having
those, I'll go with Equal.

DD> ordering potatoes with my bacon and eggs and telling them to leave the
DD> grits in the bin. More than once I have gotten the potatoes served on
DD> a bed of watery wallboard spackle. FEH!

RH> Watery grits aren't good; they need to be nice and thick. Somebody
RH> didn't cook them long enough or used the instant grits and added too
 RH> much water.

DD> AFAIAC *NO* grits are good. Thick, thin, or in the middle. I have
DD> eaten, but not enjoyed fried mush - which is a cousin to grits. But,
 DD> unless starving
DD> (literally) I'd not do that on a voluntary basis again.

Just means more for me. (G)

DD> BTW - tell Steve I asked the person I know at the Baptist church which
DD> was looking for a replacement preacher. Not good news for Steve - they
DD> hired a guy from Canuckistan who had done a stint as a "guest" pastor.

Oh well, we'll find something, somewhere. Thanks for keeping us in mind.

Catch you later,
Ruth
