-=> Quoting MICHAEL LOO to NANCY BACKUS on 05-11-14 18:49 <=-

I see that this was stuck on the broke computer... ;) Replying from the
Pond on July 4, to be uploaded when I return home...

NB>> Music has more latitude... The preciseness is only the starting
NB>> point... knowing (or sensing, feeling) what to do with it is what
NB>> makes it music... Which is not to minimize the importance of proper
NB>. rhythm, or the right notes, etc... ;)

ML> Spoken like a soloist person and a keyboardist at that.

Guilty as charged... (G) but also true for at least some accompaniment
as well... :)

ML> We have this expanse of fingerboard to deal with, devoid of
ML> signs, and something called intonation. Also When dealing
ML> with others, there's little temporal latitude either, and a
ML> couple hundredths of a second make a difference.

So you can play "between the spaces", so to speak... ;) I suspect we
are dealing somewhat in semantics, though... I don't deny the skill
needed, nor the need for precision, just saying that to make it music,
there needs to also be more... A chamber group often learns to breathe
together, and thus those hundredths of seconds don't necessarily keep
them from staying together. I've experienced it when playing
piano/organ duets with a former student of mine...

ML> In larger groups, not so much, as all one has to do is
ML> follow the weird gyrations of the guy (usually a guy) with
ML> the stick and make convincing enough squeaks, which, if they
ML> are inaccurate, one hopes will be covered by the others.

I've heard of one conductor/orchestra where the players are encouraged
to do their own. even spur-of-the-moment, thing... can't think of the
name of either at the moment... But there indeed is "safety" in
numbers, in choral groups, too, as long as it is a large enough group...
when I'm the only tenor, not so much so... (G)

ML> I almost got my revenge by sending an apple recipe ...
ML> but see another post in this packet for that.

Trying to force improvisation, eh...? (G)

 ML> Chef John's Bananas Flambe
 ML> 1 whole banana
 ML> flour
 ML> egg (whisked)
 ML> 2 oz butter
 ML> 1 oz brandy
 ML> 2 oz heavy cream
ML> 4 oz vanilla ice cream
 ML> 1 oz choc. syrup
 ML> 2 sl pound cake
ML> Peel banana and slice it lengthwise and in half.
ML> Dredge in flour then in egg.
ML> Heat butter in saute pan. Place banana in butter
 ML> and brown on both sides. Add brandy then cream;
 ML> let reduce in pan.
ML> Top pound cake with scoop of ice cream. Place
ML> half of banana on each side of ice cream.
ML> Pour cream on top followed by drizzled syrup.
 ML> Serve immediately.
 ML> Tunnicliff Inn, Cooperstown

Question... Is the flambe just the fact of being sauteed in brandy...? I
thought flambe had something to do with lighting the alcohol... ;)

... If I were here more often, I wouldn't be gone so much.
