 NB>> A little cynical, perhaps...?
 ML> Who, me?
ML> Actually, thinking of the ancient Greek philosophers, my
ML> thoughts have a lot in common with the Cynics (who were
ML> not all that cynical) as well as a bit of overlap with
ML> Epicureans and Stoics (who were, with the metonymy of
ML> millennia, not all that epicurean or stoic).

Somewhat of a synthesis of the ancient schools... yeah, me, too...
although not necessarily the exact same mix... ;)

ML> It was reasonably close to the fact but not exact.
 ML> I'll take any birthday I can get, even though I don't
ML> count them and don't really celebrate them as such. But a
ML> good meal with friends is always welcome.

Makes perfect sense to me. :)

ML> Which reminds me, today is Hap day. I won't get to see much
ML> if any of Annie, because her sister (Chris?) is taking her
ML> out, but I get lunch, drinks, dinner, and the Mets vs. Mariners.
ML> Tomorrow I get to leave this not so great motel and go
ML> on two flights with Lilli and our friend Hermien, ending
ML> up in Sitka, the ancient Russian capital of Alaska.

As I'm a few days late now... I presume Hap is doing reasonably well...?
I did see where you said something about the chemo having changed
Annie's complexion... By the time I got the mail, you'd've already been
off on your Alaska adventure with Lilli and Hermien... But the day with
Hap sounded lovely... especially for a baseball fan.... ;)

ML> As Chris (?) has the guest room, I'm at the Rodeway Inn,
ML> which has a mildewy bathroom, the world's slowest Internet
ML> (it's like each pixel and byte of information has to be
ML> nudged across the aether by no-see-ums), and a bed that
ML> seems to have granola beneath the sheets. If I hadn't
ML> been dead tired when I arrived last night, I'd have
ML> required a change of room.

Sounds altogether unlovely... ;( Revolting, even...

ML> Looking forward to the upgrade to the Super 8 in Sitka.

One trusts that that would be at least clean, if utilitarian...

NB>> Good question... I might suspect both, although drizzling the strips
NB>> would make things rather messy to work with... it might help hold the
NB>> filling in the rollups, though... (like the peas with honey on the
 NB>> knife limerick...)

ML> "But it keeps them on the knife"? Not quite in limerick
ML> form, as I recall, but I might be wrong, insofar as I can't
ML> remember the rest of it either.

Yeah, that one... true... it isn't a true limerick, just a humorous
verse... "I eat my peas with honey/ I've done it all my life/ It tastes
a little funny/ But it keeps them on the knife." I grew up with Daddy
declaiming it on a regular basis... always with a smile on his face or
at least a twinkle in his eyes... Not that I ever saw him really do
it... although at one time or another, most if not all of us kids tried
it out, to see if honey really did keep peas on a knife... (G) As I
recall, it depended on how thick the honey was... and how good at
balancing things one was to begin with... ;)

ML>> I almost got my revenge by sending an apple recipe ...
ML>> but see another post in this packet for that.
NB>> Trying to force improvisation, eh...? (G)
ML> Or inexactitude. One can as you know almost always
ML> substitute something else for apples.

With greater or lesser success, depending... ;)

NB>> ... If I were here more often, I wouldn't be gone so much.
ML> My motto these days, it would seem.

Mine, too, lately... :) So far this month, I've been home a grand
total of 10 days... with a better than even chance of being gone for a
few more before the end of the month (ie, later this week)... Our son
came home Monday (flew in from Florida via JFK), and needed to be
connected with his vehicle(s) up at the Pond... So I took him up, end of
last week, and, as it turns out, the better vehicle is currently in the
shop up in Canton until sometime this week at least... I came home for
the weekend, having commitments here, but may need to go back up to
facilitate reuniting him with said vehicle after this weeks commitments
are fulfilled... I probably should have at least taken the computer up
with me, to work on my message backlog, but didn't plan this last trip
particularly well... Oh, well... If I do have to go back up, I'll do it
this time... ;)

 ML> Flamed fruit-filled crepes
 ML> Categories: dessert, french
 ML> Servings: 6
 ML> h - for the batter
 ML> 250 g flour
 ML> 50 g creme fraiche
 ML> 3 eggs
 ML> 300 ml milk
 ML> 70 g powdered sugar
 ML> 4 Tb melted butter
ML> a splash of Calvados or Armagnac.
 ML> h - for the filling
 ML> 600 g fresh fruit
 ML> 100 g walnuts
ML> 50 ml Calvados or Armagnac
 ML> butter
 ML> powdered sugar
ML> Original title: Crepes flambees aux pommes

Hmmm... .apples...? ;) I can mentally taste this with pears and
walnuts, or maybe better, pecans... ;)

ML> Prepare the batter in the usual way. When it is beaten smooth,
ML> add the touch of booze at the last. Let rest at least an hour.
ML> Peel and slice the fruit thick. Saute in butter.
ML> Break the walnuts into small bits.
ML> Meanwhile, make the crepes. Top each with cooked fruit and
ML> nuts and roll them up. Put them on a heatproof plate, sprinkle
ML> with sugar and Calvados or Armagnac, which has been warmed
ML> beforehand. Light on fire. When the flames die down, decorate
ML> with a bit of powdered sugar and serve.
 ML> adapted from www.mygale.org/~cuisine/desserts.htm

That could be a nice dessert... :)
