Ärende: i am a camera 711

Lilli just bought a Sony RX100M3 camera - she'd
apparently coveted the RX100M2 for $600 (she's a
fairly well-to-do lady), but this is the 2015 model
and has even more bells and whistles. So she ordered
what she thought was the fancy new one at Best Buy
(of course we have it) to pick up before we leave
for the Netherlands. We took the detour there and
presented ourseves at the will-call and discovered
that they only had the 2014 model and were trying to
sell that to us. Under some duress they coughed up
the name of a store downtown on 4th that has the
latest and greatest, so we went there, and lo and
behold, she dropped $700 on it on the spot as if it
were nothing.
                                              
We had time to play with it as we sped up the
Glenn Highway toward the mountains. So we fired it
up, or started to. Dead as a doornail. Battery?
Check. Plug it into the lighter, the charging light
goes on. Then goes off. She tried to turn it on.
No go. So we figured we'll wait until we have a place
to relax and deal with it.

Our destination was the Hatcher Pass Lodge, where a
rather nice girl gave us the cabin nearest where we
parked: comfy enough, about the size of a budget hotel
room, bed and pullout couch, Clue, Trivial Pursuit
'90s edition, nice heater (though the thermostat is
in 4F increments, and for Lilli 72 was way too cold
and 76 way too hot). One issue was the toilet, a
flush latrine: apparently you do your biz, then
pump enough water in manually to dilute the product,
then pull a device that opens the bowl to the pit
below. It is recommended that you close the lid
before you do this, experience talking here.

We fiddled with the camera for an hour or so,
reinstalling the battery, reinserting the SD card,
beating it about the head and ears, and so on. Nothing.

After a while we gave up and laid it on the bed and
sort of forgot about it. At some point a green light
went on. Maybe it decided it was ready to be born or
something. We looked, and the setup screen came up,
and the battery showed fully charged.

It is an amazing camera. She took a picture south
down toward the Matanuska Valley, and we blew it up
x48 and the grass in the foreground and the road in
the distance, both were as clear as, well, clearer
than I can see.

We just ran a comparison, same scenes, between her
iPhone and this thing. Sadly, the Sony won handily,
and I can't recommend that she take the thing back
(we have a day back in Anchorage before we take off
on the 30th).

BAKED ALASKA
Categories: dessert
Yield: 1 cake

1/2 sheet cake of vanilla sponge cake
1 pt chocolate chip ice cream
1 pt coffee ice cream
4 egg whites
2 tb sugar
1/2 of a clean egg shell
1/4 c Armagnac

Cut the sheet cake into fourths. Spread the chocolate chip ice cream evenly
on one layer of the sponge cake. Top the chocolate chip ice cream with the
second piece of sponge cake. Spread the coffee ice cream evenly on top of
the sponge cake. Lay the third piece of sponge cake directly on top of the
praline ice cream. Lay the final piece of sponge cake on top of the praline
ice cream. Wrap the cake tightly with plastic wrap and place in the freezer.
Freeze the cake until firm, about 2 hours. Using an electric mixer, with
a whip attachment, whip the egg whites until soft peaks form. Add the sugar
and whip to stiff peaks. Remove the cake from the freezer. Cut a small hole
in the center of the cake about 2 inches deep and 2 inches wide. Fill the
egg shell with Armagnac. Place the shell in the cake hole. With a rubber
spatula, spread the egg whites evenly over the entire cake, except for the
shell. With a small blow torch, torch the cake until golden brown. Slice
the cake and serve with a drizzle of chocolate sauce.

The American Egg Board states: "There have been warnings against consuming
raw or lightly cooked eggs on the grounds that the egg may be contaminated
with Salmonella, a bacteria responsible for a type of food
poisoning....Healthy
people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and
other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean,
sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with
the shell."
