The one I'm trying to think of is a fairly current one... only this year
it was that I heard the discussion with the conductor in question about
the concept of allowing the leeway in concert... Terrible when one's
memory just won't cooperate... ;0

Some parts stick out more than others... ;)

ML> I can't think of any offhand, but then I am not a great

I'm probably more of an expert on hymns than on tavern songs.. I only
know about certain hymn tunes having been tavern songs from what I've
been told.. :)

NB>> Clara Wieck's father certainly encouraged her...
ML> A bit of an exception, but even she was viewed as a curiosity
ML> rather than a full musician. She may well have made a career
ML> on her own, but were it not for her associations with Robert
ML> and Johannes, she'd I think have been more of the trained
 ML> monkey than anything else.

Dunno... perhaps... From what I've read/heard, part of her father's
objection to Robert was that marriage would take away from her ability
to have her musical career... of course, the objection might have been
as much for losing his "trained monkey", but that wasn't quite how the
story seemed to be being told. Also, from what I've read/heard, she was
very influential in helping both Robert and Johannes have their music
propagated...

ML> The difficulties for women in careers were enormous.
ML> Remember again that Fanny Mendelssohn
ML> had to have her songs published under her brother's name.

Hadn't forgotten that... And I don't deny that in most cases the
difficulties were definitely enormous... Just that there were a few
that managed to beat the odds... :)
