I suppose you wouldn't, especially at the higher rates that the smart
phone with data setups tend to have...  My yearly bill is probably not
(much) more than double your monthly bill... it works out to be less
than $10/mo including tax...

Not yet... those are usually known places... :)   But he did use it to
find an AutoZone on our way up to the Pond, as he wanted to stop on the
way to get some stuff he figured he'd need to get his vehicles going
once we got there...  Some years back, he tried using it to find a bank
branch... which turned out to be long gone, although the GPS still
thought it existed...  ;)

Sometimes the GPS has a mind of its own...  (G)   I suppose it might be
a more direct route than one's familiar one, but there can be other
factors at play...  :)
