NB>> On long trips growing up, the front seat passenger's responsibility
NB>> was to keep the driver awake... ;) Good thing that there was no
NB>> oncoming traffic, and that you stayed on the road...! :)
ML> Lot of good things. The car, despite the a/c being on full,
ML> was comfortably, snoozably warm, and despite our having
ML> slept okay, we were very snoozable, and so we snoozed.
ML> We got ours, in a tiny way, later, pulling into a gas
ML> station to fill up (a wise thing after a couple hundred
ML> mountainous miles on the road). As I got out of the car,
ML> a bee (bumblebee at that, normally not particularly
ML> aggressive) flew in and stung me on the pinky.

Where was this happening...? Perhaps the bee was being overstimulated
by the weather, just as you were being snoozled...?

ML> I got into the bathroom and ran cold water over it and
ML> then asked the minimart attendant for some ice. Lilli
ML> contributed a Zyrtec (I think: I get that and Zantac
ML> mixed up) to the cause, and I had half of it. Worked

Zantac is stomach (my backup, in case Prilosec isn't enough). Zyrtec
is allergy... sounds like you're right... ;)

ML> nicely. Then it was her turn for the bathroom, where
ML> she stayed a long time - maybe the seriousness of the
 ML> situation had hit her.

Could well be... delayed reaction is pretty common... ;)

ML>> Sometimes I am inclined to believe in guardian angels.
 NB>> Yeup... :)
ML> Hard to say, though, when you think of the people who actually
ML> do get squashed. It's like the Germans praying Gott strafe
ML> England and getting shot down themselves. You win some, you
ML> lose some. I've been lucky (or have a hard-working one).

Richard's grampa used to send us off with "now, don't drive too fast for
your guardian angel to keep up" or some such, after invoking the angel
to protect us on our homeward journey... ;)

ML>> Actually, thinking of the ancient Greek philosophers, my
ML>> thoughts have a lot in common with the Cynics (who were
ML>> not all that cynical) as well as a bit of overlap with
ML>> Epicureans and Stoics (who were, with the metonymy of
ML>> millennia, not all that epicurean or stoic).
NB>> Somewhat of a synthesis of the ancient schools... yeah, me, too...
NB>> although not necessarily the exact same mix... ;)
ML> If everyone had the same mix, there would be no schools
ML> of anything, much less philosophy. Your experiences bring
ML> different things to your equation than mine; also there
ML> are predilections built in from your ancestors, whether
 ML> by genes or upbringing.

True. :)

ML> It was a great time, and the succeeding time as well, and
ML> then this next leg into the Netherlands. Next week Ian's,
ML> then my poor tatty pocketbook threatens to fall apart
 ML> altogether.

And will have to be replenished/refurbished before your foray into the
Southern Hemisphere...?

ML>> As Chris (?) has the guest room, I'm at the Rodeway Inn,
NB>> Sounds altogether unlovely... ;( Revolting, even ...
ML> I read a review of a certain airport lounge that said
ML> that it was just one step up from a refugee camp. It
ML> being admitted that that must have been an exaggeration,
ML> this place was at least two or three steps up from a
 ML> refugee camp.

Faint praise. ;0

ML> And the door locked, unlike the ones at the hotel in Kodiak
ML> a couple years ago (they had just put in new locks there,
ML> but an earth movement apparently misaligned many of them).

Not quite their fault, then, was it...? Or had they knowingly built on
an existing fault... ;)

 ML>> Flamed fruit-filled crepes
ML>> Original title: Crepes flambees aux pommes
NB>> Hmmm... .apples...? ;) I can mentally taste this with pears
NB>> and walnuts, or maybe better, pecans... ;)
ML> Yep, that was the original. Cherries, apricots, peaches,
ML> I think all would work.

I'd agree... :)

ML> Here's another kind of pommes you could eat, though:
 ML> Title: Pumpkin Potatoes

Pommes de terre... :) Yup... I can eat those.... :) My mom
doesn't, though, since they are on her nightshade list of no-no's...

ML> The directions for this recipe are very loose; Boil together equal
ML> parts of peeled potatoes and pumpkin. When cooked, drain them, add 1
ML> good sized onion, finely chopped and a piece of butter. Mash all till
ML> creamy, season to taste and serve with golden sliced of fried salt
ML> pork or bacon. To quote Mme. Benoit, "Grand-mere was a wizard with
ML> pumpkin. Her mashed potatoes pumpkin french fried chips were super.

So... after mashing and mixing, one french-fries the mash into chips...?
Perhaps like UDD's fried fat...?

ttyl neb

... Nothing is ever lost. It's just where it doesn't belong.
