The flight loaded up late but landed early. Until the
last moment there were two empties up front, which were
filled by a road warrior and a young kid who got the seat
next to mine. The road warrior didn't drink. The kid had
a Bloody Mary and two glasses of red wine, and when the
wine ran out switched to rum and Diet, of which he had two
before we ran out of airspace. That is if I count correctly
five drinks in an hour. Heck, when you get a rare chance at
free booze, why not take advantage. I just zoned out of and
back into consciousness and passed up all kind offers - the
lead FA must have chosen to be a good example for his crew
and came by three or four times to ask me if I wanted
anything; no, no, no, and not even the snack box. Much more
attentive than your standard Mesa dba United Express flight.

The consequence was that I was hungry leaving the plane and
went to the food court for inspiration. The Billy Goat
provided none (you can get single, double, or triple 2-oz
patties), but there was tofu on the steam table at Manchu
Wok across the way, so I asked the lady for just tofu, no
rice, no noodles, and she surlily said, it'll cost you the
same. I shrugged, and she slopped a few cubes of bean curd
into my clamshell, saying that I had to choose a second
choice. More tofu? No, not possible, there wasn't enough.
Well, a big batch of orange chicken had just come out, so
that's what I got, an enormous blob of it, about three times
the amount of the tofu, which was palatable and reasonably
authentic; it was also noticeably spicy (the sign said
"spicy tofu" but I didn't believe it). The chicken was not
too bad, more sour than sweet, more spicy than orangey, but
more greasy breading than meat; if I wanted to escape a
carb overdose, this was not the way. It filled me up, and
a packet of vinegar hot sauce increased the heat without
substantially increasing the tartness. They must overseason
with an eye to flavoring up a bunch of starch.

The club desk couldn't get my information off the US-issued
boarding pass, and the concierge looked at me with suspicion
but after seeing my proper credentials willingly replaced my
boarding pass with one that looked more Unitedly and wished
me a wonderful day. The implication being that she was too
used to dealing with impostors and conpersons, but once my
bona fides was established, all was well. Indeed, during
this two-minute transaction the other agent turned away an
impostor. And O'Hare is by far not the most horrid airport
to wait in. At least there's the Manchu Wok.

I asked the bartender what the house Bourbon was, and he
said, the very best, and with a flourish pulled out a bottle
of McCormick. I chuckled, and he chuckled, and I got an MGD.
