Sugar Fire is in a strip mall out a couple miles - the
location is unpromising, but the smells are good, though
tending toward the caramelly end of things (they must
pour sugar on the ribs and brisket in cooking to achieve
that, er, aroma and taste).

We got our usual, a pound of fatty brisket, and the
smallest possible order of ribs (2 or 4, I forget) as an
impulse buy on the side (no other sides, which take away
from the enjoyment of the meat).

The Q was excellent. Almost Austin quality. Tender
but not disintegrating meat, good bark, meaty and smoky.

The sauces, on the other hand - I got the "Texas HOT,"
which was almost devoid of hotness and very sweet.
Discouraged by this, I didn't taste any of the others
and in fact consumed most of my delicious food unsauced.

Cahokia Mounds is one of two dozen or so World Heritage
Sites in the US, along with the Grand Canyon and places of
similar stature. I guess we Americans don't value
archaeological things as we should - I'd only vaguely if at
all heard of these before, but here they were, fifteen
minutes from a major metropolis and largely unrecognized.
There were supposedly over a hundred of these mounds at
one time - many were leveled without any thought for what
they might have been; they were "discovered" when the
workers excavating for an interchange for the Interstate
found Indian leavings as recently as the 1960s.


They're across the border, I guess the area is called East
St. Louis; the park is run by the state of Illinois, with
a pretty elaborate museum/visitor center that captivated us
for an hour or more. The site itself is pleasant but not
outwardly impressive but for its implications of a glorious
past: the mounds are now just mounds, though there is a
reconstructed woodhenge that looked to me like a circle
made of telephone poles.
