ML>> Stokowski encouraged some leeway when he conducted the American
ML>> Symphony Orchestra (but not New York or Philadelphia). It was
ML>> the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, where some of my friends worked,
ML>> where a certain leeway was encouraged, but only when agreed on
 ML>> in rehearsal.
NB>> The one I'm trying to think of is a fairly current one... only this
NB>> year it was that I heard the discussion with the conductor in question
NB>> about the concept of allowing the leeway in concert... Terrible when
 NB>> one's memory just won't cooperate... ;0
ML> Too bad - the topic is interesting. I fear, though, that
ML> the conductor's disquisition referred to solo lines within
ML> an orchestral piece, rather than the massed sections or the
 ML> music as a whole.

Possibly only solo lines, but the impression I got was of also within
the massed sections... He was saying something about the spontaneity
being a better good than the possible raggedness would be a bad... If I
hear or figure out who it was, I'll let you know... It's possibly one
of the guest conductors from last year's RPO season, and maybe the
interview I heard will be part of the broadcasts (they just started the
second iteration of the season) and I'll catch it when it comes by. One
can hope, anyway.. (G)

ML>> I've always enjoyed being one on a part but detested being
 ML>> alone alone.
NB>> Some parts stick out more than others... ;)
ML> Sticking out is okay. Sticking out without support is
 ML> a very tough thing.

Quite.

ML>> The difficulties for women in careers were enormous.
ML>> Remember again that Fanny Mendelssohn
ML>> had to have her songs published under her brother's name.
NB>> Hadn't forgotten that... And I don't deny that in most cases the
NB>> difficulties were definitely enormous... Just that there were a few
NB>> that managed to beat the odds... :)

ML> Nannerl Mozart was treated like a trained monkey, though by
ML> some accounts she was as talented as her brother (Wolfgang
 ML> also, but he grew out of it);

Leopold thought he had a good thing going... ;0 Wolfgang wrote his
4-hand duets for himself and his sister, I understood... Dunno if she
ever played them as an adult, though...

ML> there was pretty much no place for a woman in any
ML> professional or intellectual position until relatively
ML> recently. Clara might have found a niche had her career not
ML> been subordinated to that of her husband, but it's not clear
ML> how seriously she would have been taken. I can't think of a
ML> woman with an independent career in the field like between
ML> Hildegarde and the Boulanger sisters.

Amy Beach, maybe...? I've not made a in-depth study of it, but have
been at least aware of women in music... There were a number of women
active in writing hymns, both words and music, but that may be not quite
the same topic... :)

ML> It of course was worse in the performing arts than in literature
ML> where one could hide behind a male name or similar subterfuges.

Like Currer Bell and her sisters, George Sand, etc... If they weren't
seen, who'd know that they weren't male... ;)
