Highland Hospital has more of that sort of setup... although they plan
their daily menus out for a week, and that is the fallback, if one
doesn't order from the choices.  One has to call by a certain time to
get the specially ordered choices... they also allow the guests to order
and have their meals brought to the patient room, if done by a certain
time... I used that a couple of times when I was there with either MJ or
Gwen... don't remember now which... you can prepay for a number of meals
and then use it as needed...  All of it comes together on the delivery
carts, unless a patient special orders something after the normal
cutoff. 

At Unity, where Richard was, they were piloting a program (maybe just on
the cardiac units?) where there was a menu person there on the floor
during the day to put your choices into the computer, and to call down
to the kitchen for you if there were any difficulties...  She'd come
round once a day with the computer to run down your choices for the next
day's meals, and you could choose what you wanted from that.  I guess
there were always also some sandwich choices that could be more tailored
if the main choices didn't appeal...  :)  If what came wasn't ok after
all, something else could be ordered... those tended to come up on a
later delivery cart, that delivered to the whole hospital at once.  The
first night on the floor, Richard's supper came on that (since of course
he hadn't been there earlier to order for the normal delivery), and it
did take a while... ;)

Sometimes one wonders...  I rarely get meals at the hospital, usually
just am not wishing to leave the room for that long in case I miss some
important visit... and the few times I have, it's not usually been as
good as I'd hoped it would be.  I remember, though, years ago, when I
worked next door to the community hospital, that some of us regularly
would go to their cafeteria for a good, filling, non-expensive lunch.
