I saw Steve's decision to back off on that experiment due to the
urushiol issue... That does put a damper on things... ;)

NB>>> Slipping away. Inevitable, but hard to watch....

Perhaps that is the wrong question... I got so I'd ask a variant on that
with my grandmother... I'd ask who she thought I was... as long as she
was still willing/able to talk, she'd have some sort of (revealing)
answer... that was how I tracked how far back she'd travelled since the
last time... In your mom's case, it might just get the answer that she
does recognize you for who you are... And it may just be that your
telling her who you are sufficiently lodges there that she could bring
it up for your brother later... :)

RH> Makes me wonder, if they had lived longer, how my maternal

No real telling... There's so many factors, most of them health-related,
in one way or another... My grandmother's body was strong enough to get
her to age 97, but strokes probably precipitated the memory regression.
My other grandmother gradually became frail in body, but her mind was
still sharp when she passed at age 94. My paternal grandfather had a
series of heart attacks (and had had lung cancer diagnosed) and died at
73, still pretty young and not all that frail. My other grandfather
ended up with prostate cancer that eventually spread, but he lived well
into his 90's too. His mind was still pretty good up until the cancer
spread there, at the very end...

NB>> Maybe if he understood that she is more there than meets the eye, it
NB>> might make it easier for him... Some of her non-response might be
NB>> stroke-related with the response locked inside herself, rather than
 NB>> the dementia causing a true non-response...

RH> It's more dementia, don't know for sure if she's had any strokes. Her
RH> diabetes has been poorly controlled but not as out of control as my
RH> brother's is/was. We see the lunch/dinner menues posted each day at
RH> the facility but don't know which choices Mom makes. The meals are
RH> fairly balanced, a bit heavier on carbs than I think they should be
RH> but, it's not as bad as it could be. Don't know how those on Mom's
RH> floor decide what they're going to eat but there's always a choice of
RH> 2 entrees. I think it's a good guessing on the part of the food
 RH> service folks.

After a while, the staff probably would have some idea of what is more
likely to be appreciated by the persons... And possibly have ways of
interacting with them to draw out some sort of response... :) Of
course, just because it gets set before them doesn't mean for sure that
it would all be eaten... :)

RH>> The other day I made me a BLT using my bread. Steve made 2, using the
 RH>> denser bread.
NB>> The denser bread probably was more filling, too... :) I think I'd
NB>> be more likely to save that for other purposes than sandwich making,
NB>> though... :) Like dunking in soup, or sopping up juices... ;)

RH> Mine was filling enough for me. The home made bread is a lot more
RH> filling than the store bought generic, even some of the name brand,
RH> breads. Also, it doesn't take as much to fill me up as it did when I
 RH> was younger.

You've shrunk your tummy, and haven't quite the caloric needs of earlier
times... ;)

RH>> Thanks. The "shoulda, coulda, wouldas" are beginning to hit Bill now,
RH>> along with the reality of the situation that is, now. At least I know
RH>> he's probably eating better while he's in the hospital. (G)
NB>> Good chance of that... although we all know the variances in hospital
 NB>> food... (G)

RH> Very true there. But, he's probably not eating Hot Pockets, tv
RH> dinners, etc in the hospital. (G)

That's a pretty safe assumption... (G) Unless he has someone smuggling
them in for him, and I understand from the circumstances that that is
highly unlikely... :) Besides, there's someone else preparing the food
for him there, anyway... ;)
