====================================================================
Hi Dave,

DD> I know - getting everyday useful information from some gummint
DD> documents is about as satisfying as dipping soup with a fork.

RH> Some soups are thick enough to eat with a fork. Steve puts enough
RH> crackers into most of his that the spoon stands upright. But, he still
RH> eats it with the spoon, not a fork.

DD> I submit that you knew where I was going with that. OTOH, the only
DD> "soup" I put crackers (oyster crackers, never, ever saltines) in is
DD> very oily chilli. And that only to soak up all that wonderful oil. In
DD> my lexicon any soup thick enough (as served) to be eaten with a fork
 DD> is a stew. Bv)=

Semantics! (or is it some antics?)

 DD> Or a chowder ..................

DD> But, seriously, agencies like USDA, NIH, etc. tend to over-analyse
DD> things so that they can look busy without doing any actual work.

RH> They aren't the only ones that do. Truth be told, I think all of us
RH> have done the same thing at least once in our lives.

DD> When I worked for the Illinois Department of Agriculture I didn't do
DD> "busy work" nor require my workers to do so. The regular bureaucraps
DD> couldn't seem to get a grip on that attitude. I once told the director
DD> of the department that when the work was all caught up we were going
 DD> to do a Beetle Bailey. Bv)=

RH> You're one of the exceptions to the above rule then. You didn't even
RH> take a break to stretch your legs, relax your eyes, etc?

DD> But, of course. We took breaks - steady working is less productive
DD> than work punctuated by the occasional and necessary break. Even if it
DD> is just to re-group mentally.

Or walk over to the vending machine for your mid afternoon sugar hit?

DD> Lots of stuff that causes problem for uncontrolled diabetics. One of
DD> the guys I visit with at the truck stop is trying his best to get his
DD> diabetes under control before the Secretary of State yanks his driving
 DD> licence.

RH> Good reason to work at it. My brother said not only is his blood sugar
RH> out of control but his platelet level is low, no matter how they've
RH> tried to bring it up. He looked jaundiced in May--something was going
RH> on then that probably contributed to what happened last month. As of
RH> last night, he'd not yet met with a dietitcian either.

 DD> OUCH!

I am surprised too, thought that would have been one of the first people
other than doctors and nurses that he would have met. Steve and I are a
bit surprised that we didn't get a call on the order of "..........was
found dead in the home, believed to have been dead several days......".

 RH> Looks good--and zingy! (G)

DD> Just a little zippy. The peaches (or apricots) really set things off.

RH> But being preserved peaches or apricots, the carb factor goes up also.
RH> My number have been bouncing around the past couple of months; I want
RH> to get them consistant within a certain range so will be watching carbs
RH> (dense vs light, ratin to protein, etc) a bit closer.

DD> I strive for a steady average fasting figure of between 80 and 110. I
DD> used to go nuts if something spiked the sugar numbers. Then I figured
DD> out that it all smooths out pretty well. My primary care doctor tells
DD> me that as long as I pin-cushion a finger twice a week, fasting,
DD> (first thing in the morning) and the figures remain within range ...
DD> there is no need to obsess over it. As he said, "You know what to do
 DD> by now."

My doctor has been happy with my numbers. I still check every day, just
as a way to keep myself in line. I could probably go with less often but
I'd rather keep up the daily routine for a bit longer--helps keep me on
the straight and narrow. (G)
