====================================================================
Hi Michael,

 ML> De gustibus non disputandum.
ML> I used to point out that de gustibus totum disputandum,
ML> that's what makes life interesting, but people didn't
RH> OK, I've forgotten enough of my Latin, will you please translate this?

ML> De gustibus non disputandum. Literally, about taste there
ML> shouldn't be any discussion. I guess this is true for the
ML> sake of amity. The gist is that there's no sense fussing
ML> about matters of taste (about which there's no accounting),
ML> because short of Aunt Ah's procedure there's no way to
ML> change other people's tastes. I disagree with that last
 ML> to a certain extent.

I can't agree with Aunt Ah's method either. I had more than 8 tastes of
some things and still don't like them. (G)

ML> De gustibus totum disputandum. Literally, about taste
ML> there is everything to discuss. This is my view on the
ML> subject - some of the most entertaining exchanges here
ML> have been on such disputations topics as the presence or
ML> absence of beans or tomatoes or onions in chili, how to
ML> cook rice, the relative merits of light vs. dark chicken,
 ML> and so on.

It's been fun following some of the threads over the years. Too bad some
of the main characters in them are no longer with us; the echo had some
pretty interesting discussions when they were around.

Thanks for translating the Latin; I couldn't quite get the nuances but
it's been too many years since I was in a Latin classroom.

ML> probably take a step back from alcohol as a subject for
 ML> discussion here.

ML> It's not of course a totally taboo subject, but sliding
ML> into territory other than the practical, well, one can get
ML> into the disputatious without trying too hard, and we'll
 ML> just not go there.

RH> I'll do so. Are you back in the States now or still wandering around
 RH> Europe?

ML> I should have stalled a couple days so as to be able to
ML> say "neither." I'm recharging my batteries and getting
ML> more medicine before I go off to Panama and Argentina
ML> on a leg that should if I am lucky cost a little less
ML> (like 1/3 as much) than the European one. I should
ML> learn to go places that are cheaper than staying home,
 ML> rather than double.

You got back from Europe before the volcano in Iceland started up again.
As of a bit earlier tonight, i understand air travel was going to be
quite dicey flying in/out of Europe for a bit. Going to have some of
that Argentinian beef I've read that is supposed to be so good?

RH> We don't patronise the chain any more, enough other good (and bad)
RH> places around to chose from for a bite to eat.
ML> There's no particular reason to go there.
 RH> Not especially.

 ML> I actually had a good reason for going - a friend's
ML> husband was manager at one, so when feeling poor we
ML> would go there and have the food comped (nonetheless,
ML> I tended to get just fried green beans and/or a burger).
ML> The privilege is supposed to be for employees and their
ML> families only, but the guy was the manager, so nobody
ML> could say anything, and I was almost family anyhow.

Can't talk to the manager about the manager breaking rules? When we were
in AZ and Deborah was working for Taco Bell, one time when Steve and I
came in, the manager gave us a half price meal--one she would have had
if she wanted, on that shift. IIRC, it was a shorter shift so she
declined the meal so we could have the discount. We only did it once
tho, out of fairness to her, and we hadn't anticipated he'd do that.

RH> Steve bought a juicer a few weeks ago and is having fun experimenting
RH> with that. He made a batch of vegetable juice that tasted pretty
RH> good, then the next one was quite grassy tasting, IMO. He added a
RH> couple more tomatoes and said that the flavor was improved but I'll
RH> let him finish that jar. (G)

ML> Different vegetables, or different ratios, or different
 ML> levels of ripeness?

You need to ask him what he's done; I'm letting him run with the juicing
thing. I'll drink some from time to time but not getting into the
production end, and most often, not the clean up end either.

Catch you later,
