yeah, i just saw some posts from him where they have returned from ireland...

as far as the gating stuff goes, some systems gate some things to fidonet on a
one-way basis and others are bi-directional... some of the bi-directional ones
are free-flowing and some require manual intervention to send the posts to the
other side of the gate... in the case of the OS2HARDWARE-L echo, it is a gated
group (hosted by yahoo in this case) that rejects posts by non-members so a
member has to forward any posts made on the fido side to the internet side so
they will be accepted by the group and hopefully replied to...

its a QWK format thing... the message areas are recognized by QWK by number and
if the number changes then the messages go into the wrong area... i think what
i'm going to have to do is a double-buffering method between the bbs and the
qwk stuff... i'm still trying to work it all out and visualize how it will work
for areas being added, deleted, moved or renamed so that it doesn't cause a
problem for offline users... i have to dig into the bluewave stuff to see how
it indexes the areas and will probably end up using the same double-buffering
there as well...

all this makes me appreciate the FTN methods even more where areas are
identified by a 'echotag' and can be listed in any order with any titles which
can change at any time... with the echotag being the key to the area, it is a
lot easier... for example, the echotag of this area is COOKING on all systems
that carry it... on my bbs, it is currently area number 158 in my configs and
has the title of "[FIDO] COOKING"...

i reverted some years back to using the echotag as the area name/title...
mostly because some of them were quite long and got chopped off... also because
a lot of them were something like

   The official support and discussion echo for BLAHBLAH

and the chopping would be done near 'discussion' or 'echo' or just after
because the bbs allots 40 characters for the area name... other software may
allot more or less... so anyway, all the area names/titles didn't get to the
actual topic description of 'BLAHBLAH' since they were chopped off...
