ML>> main motivation seems to be to prove they're smarter than

ML>> for 500 years of civilized music.
NB>> Perhaps not nobody, just not as many as one would like
ML> The percentages are against us, unless we're as effective and
ML> virulent as the cholera or something.

Perhaps, but there remains the fact that it has survived this far,
despite incursions all along... The loyal remnant may be all that is
needed to survive. And rediscoveries along the way... ;)

ML>> And with the public stations held to a nonpublic financial
ML>> standard, there's not much to be done about that.
NB>> Some do try to keep to a non-profit nonpublic standard
ML> Perhaps I have unrealistic standards, but WGBH no longer does
ML> it for me, and WBUR has slid way downhill; WHRB and occasionally
ML> WERS might appear to hold the line, but they're college stations
ML> and thus less beholden to the mass market. WBUR is nominally a
ML> college station, but ha ha to that.

WBUR is probably in a similar position to WSLU/NCPR (North Country
Public Radio), housed on a campus, and originally a college station, but
which has become something a lot more wide-spread and taken over more by
the paid adults... ;) What I've seen is college stations that seem to
be more eclectic (read, less classical but with more alternative musics
than the country or pop or rap etc stations)... whether WRUR here or
WSLU etc in Canton... WITR (RIT's station) never did have much
classical, and its variety included more rock, hard rock, metal rock,
etc...

I'll admit that there are times when it seems to me that WXXI is
slipping some, but more on the order of playing certain mediocre things
more often than I'm happy with... But they still have a wide variety of
serious music, from renaissance and baroque to classical and romantic to
impressionistic, neo-classical, 12-tone, and on to modern newer music...
some of which harks back to the older styles... And usually still
program whole large works, not just excerpts from them, except at
certain hours...

ML>> At least Sirius had several "sirius" music channels,
ML>> pretty middle-of-the-road as far as I could see,
 ML>> nothing challenging.
NB>> The only time I was exposed to them I was singularly unimpressed...
ML> If you want to hear Fuer Elise and a couple Hungarian Dances
ML> and a Vivaldi concerto and five minutes of Pavarotti bellowing
 ML> every hour, it's fine.

Repeated over and over and over... exactly... which was part of the
problem... I do like the first three, but as part of a much larger
mix... :) Not keen on opera, though a little (non-repetitive) is or
at least can be tolerable... ;)

ML>> The features are interesting - someone bought the budget
ML>> version, so you click on, say, Beat Bobby Flay or Hotel
ML>> Impossible or even Guy frickin' Fieri and try to scroll
ML>> down the episodes ... and you discover that only one
ML>> show of each title is available.
 NB>> How frustrating...
ML> I suppose I should complain, but as more and more people are
ML> bringing their iPods and iPads and iTunes and iDon'tKnows,
ML> there's no incentive for the airline to keep up. Every seat
ML> in the new business class configuration has AC power and
ML> USB ports (not sure about coach, I haven't flown it yet
ML> but am in danger of doing so soon so may report on this).

I suppose. Makes it harder for those of us that travel less encumbered,
though... ;)

ML>> So I put on the map (used to be zoomable, now replaced
ML>> by a cheap version), stuff in earplugs, stretch out, and
 ML>> attempt to sleep.
 NB>> Sensible solution... :)
ML> As I enjoy sleeping and do it relatively well on motorized
ML> conveyances, it seems to be. But of course there's then
ML> less point to fighting for the upgrade.

True. ;)

NB>>> I gave up taking him seriously a long time ago...
 ML>> Theological or aesthetic perfection?
NB>> Quasi-theological... There are, however certain places where one can
NB>> hear better than others... but that wasn't any of his concern...
ML> Sounds more like nut-casical rather than theological.

Got it. ;)

ML> And anyway, if there were spots in the sanctuary that
ML> were more meritorious than others, wouldn't the truly
ML> good thing to do be to let other people have those
 ML> places rather than oneself?

One might think so. :)

NB>> My mom wants seats where she can see the guest pianist's hands...
NB>> other than that she isn't too picky... :)
ML> I've gone to concerts where I could see the pianist's hands ...
ML> when I've been the page turner. It's always been an adventure,
ML> given my eyesight - now that that has deteriorated beyond the
ML> musically useful stage, no more turnpaging for me.

Sigh... Never been a page turner at a real concert, but have done on
occasion... ;) Roped Richard into pageturning for me a time or two,
though... ;)
