Way out of my thoughts at that time! I went to Canada (Niagara Falls)
when I was probably about 7 years old but the only other travelling I
did was to central NJ to see my grandparents and Mom's sisters. The
first trip outside of those was when I was 12--out to Michigan via
Canada. After that my folks took us camping to mostly New England, but
down to the DC area when I was 13. I made my first overseas trip shortly
before getting married, got west of the Mississippi for the first time 8
years later. As a kid I never would have thought I'd have travelled as
much as I have so places like Panama (which I knew about) or Yellowknife
(which I didn't know about) were totally off my radar. OTOH, when my
high school class was getting ready for its 20 year reunion, a mail out
was sent, with addresses of all the class members. A good half of them,
if not more, (total of 63 in the class) were within a 25 mile radius of
M'ville. I was the furthest away, in Berlin at the time.

Del Monte decamped to the Phillipines while we were in HI. They said it
was cheaper to grow pineapple there and import it to the US for
proccessing than to grow it in HI. Some years ago when we were visiting
Rachel and David who were in SC at the time, I saw a pineapple from
Costa Rica. It was maybe about half the size of a Hawaiian one, and
looked pretty miserable.

Not surprising, given your situation.

We had some good ones in Germany and Switzerland. The girls got some
Smurf ice cream in Switzerland--vanilla ice cream packed into plastic
Smurf heads. They also learned to enjoy spaghetti eis in Germany. Run a
scoop or 2 of vanilla ice cream thru a potato ricer into a bowl. (Use
chocolate or coffee ice cream for whole wheat pasta.) Top with
strawberry sauce, malted milk balls and shaved white chocolate.
Chocolate chips can be used to make a "meat sauce" instead of the "meat
balls" of the malted milk balls.
