===================
Hi Nancy,

RH> Yes, I imagine if we'd walked in about 2:30 in the afternoon, they'd
RH> be rather quiet. That is, during the week, most likely a different
RH> story on week ends, with probably a major crowd on Sunday at that time.

NB> True... the after church crowd on Sundays tends to skew the lull... ;)

Since our Life Group meets right after church, we include lunch as part
of the meeting. A few times when we've not had LG, we've gone to the
local cafeteria for lunch. They do it buffet style on Sundays to speed
up the line; on Easter it can be backed up quite far. The serving line
is on the opposite side of the room from the entry doors and people are
usually backed up to the doors and beyond. But, it's good food, Southern
style home cooking and if you go away hungry, it's your own fault. (G)

RH> Depends on the chain, the time we have or want to take, etc. Sometimes
RH> we don't want to take the time, even that a buffet would entail. OTOH,
RH> we stopped for a (slightly) early lunch at Chubby's BBQ in MD on the
RH> way south last month. We'd stopped on the way north in May, knew they
RH> were good and when we saw the sign advertising the newest addition to
RH> the menu (pastrami), we had to give it a try. (G)

NB> I remember you mentioning that one. :) I rarely want to take the
NB> time while traveling... and usually we aren't even considering going
 NB> out
NB> unless we do have at least some amount of time available...
NB> Exceptions exist, of course... like when we caught a quick meal at
NB> Wendy's when we had only a short time between the end of morning
NB> service and getting to a nearby graveyard for a graveside service for
NB> Mike... no time to run
NB> home, and no idea how long things would be... :)

Sometimes stopping for a quick meal somewhere is much better use of time
than trying to go home and put a meal together.

NB> NB>> Emergency situations change things, but only for the duration...
 NB> :)

RH> Yes, within a couple of weeks, security had eased off somewhat, only
RH> to be tightened again, briefly, when war was declared in Afghanistan.
RH> It did ease off a bit some time later but we couldn't just sail thru
 RH> the gate any more.

NB> No, some things did change permanently... that was when Fort Drum
NB> reduced the number of their active gates and cracked down on civilians
NB> cutting through the fort, at least the main section... Useta was that
NB> there were actually a number of open roads that passed through even
NB> the "fortified" part of the fort... Now there's none of those roads
 NB> (some
NB> of them simply blocked off that used to be open, some simply totally
NB> within the barbed wire protected area), only the ones that either
NB> skirt the area, or that cross the open training areas, like Rt 3A, are
 NB> still
NB> open to regular traffic... One road that used to be open into the
NB> fort now is one of the main gates....

We've never been to Fort Drum. We didn't want to get stationed there
(for several reasons) and it's not in our path of travel between western
NY and the Catskills. One of these days we may get up to the area and
check it out. Maybe if there's another picnic at the pond and we can get
to it?

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
