==================
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> reserves. I think it was useful for him for getting the jobs in
NB> the NB>> Naval Research Labs as a civilian physicist that he
NB> interspersed with NB>> his teaching positions over the years...
NB> Thankfully they never called NB>> him up from the reserves... :)

RH> Sounds like he was in too valuable a civilian position to get take
 RH> away from that.

 NB> Probably. :)

It's often a good reason for not drafting someone, especially in war
time.

NB> came as unplanned NB>> unexpected caboose babies... 8 and 12 years
NB> after #5 respectively... NB>> the last one is more than 21 years
NB> younger than her oldest (who is NB>> 10 months younger than my son).

RH> Good thing you like geneology, keeping big families straight can
 RH> really get confusing.

NB> True. I'm pretty good at relative ages, but actual age can be a
NB> different story, unless I can find one person to figure from... or,
NB> better yet, look it up in my records... ;)

And figure out who's related to who, and how they're related. These
cousins removed and all that can get confusing, just as easy to say 2nd
or 3rd or whatever cousin.

NB> didn't want to wait NB>> that long to get married... They had met
NB> before she went away for NB>> that first year of college at
 NB> Maryville...

RH> My parents met at a Freshman mixer dance the first week of school in
RH> 1946. Mom was just out of high school, Dad graduated 7 years before,
RH> worked and fought in WWII before going into the Reserves and then to
 RH> college.

NB> My parents met at church. Daddy was stationed in the DC area, and a
NB> friend steered him to the church Grampa was pastoring in Anacostia. I
NB> think he finished up his PhD at Yale the year that Mommy went to
NB> Maryville... I know that when they got married he had his PhD and had
NB> put in his 2 years of service in the Navy.

So he was ready to settle down and begin applying his classroom work to
real life work experience.

RH> They got married in 1950 and Dad claims that for the first 6
RH> months, she fed him nothing but left overs. (G)

NB> Sounds to me as though there wasn't time for a lot of cooking... :)
NB> And it couldn't all be leftovers unless someone else did the original
 NB> cooking... (G)

He was just trying to give us a hard time. Dad was working full time,
Mom was a stay at home and had her first baby after they'd been married
a bit over a year.

RH> I did not mind at all when he went to college. At the time, NYS had a
RH> drinking age of 18 and he'd come home & tell us (kids) about his
RH> drinking. So "worldly wise", that when we toured the Utica Club
RH> brewery and he got his free sample of beer, he was less than
RH> complimentary on it's taste. Me, I was just as happy with the root beer
RH> they served to those under the drinking age (I was 17); beer never was
 RH> that appealing to me.

NB> Typical older brother there... ;) Just as well I didn't have one
NB> (being, of course, the oldest anyway)... ;) I never thought much of
NB> beer either... still don't, even though I have no scruples against
 NB> moderate drinking. :)

Older brothers can be a pain, and when they try to show off what they've
learned in college (not textbook learning), they're even more of a pain.
In high school my brother was a big fish in a little pond, in college he
was a very little fish in a huge pond. He didn't graduate but
(eventually) wound up working for NY State DMV in Albany. I think he ate
his big meal of the day at the office cafeteria and a tv dinner type
meal for supper; he's not a cook.

Catch you later,
Ruth
