Hi Nancy,

NB> RH>> Sometimes small, sometimes major. I've been hit with what a
NB> RH>> lot of people would consider major, but to me, they're minor
NB> RH>> compared to what others I know are going thru.
NB> NB>> All depends on one's perspective, after all...

RH> Yes, and knowing I've not been hit with a number of things, I think
RH> I'm doing pretty well, overall.

NB> Focusing on what one has been spared, rather than what one's been
NB> through, is probably a healthier outlook...

Counting blessings, not bummers is always a healthier outlook.

NB> NB>> You could put that master chef in quotes... I suspect there's,
NB> NB>> usually at least, one person heading the crew... :)

RH> Head cook, who probably follows recipies like a robot. Last time Dad
RH> was in, Don said he thought the meatloaf was good but not much else.
RH> As he (Don) said, "we all know Dad's tastes" so I guess the meatloaf
RH> wasn't that great in reality.

NB> Sounds like, except for the presentation, there's not much to choose
NB> between the large or the small kitchens... ;) And maybe Strong (or
NB> the other big hospitals around here) would do better, as they might
NB> put just a little more effort into it... :)

More competition among the various hospitals. When you're the only one
in town (and for miles around), there's a lot of WYSIWYG on the menu.

NB> NB>> At 3 I was probably fetching diapers already... at 5 or so I
NB> NB>> brought my 3yo sister with me to kindergarten one day... walking
NB> NB>> the half-mile or so with her in tow... :)

RH> Your parents probably "freaked out" over that. This day & age, they'd
RH> have thought little sister had been abducted by a stranger, not going
RH> to school with big sister.

NB> No... it was a planned event, and Mommy knew I was taking her with
NB> me... That just left two smaller children home that day... but I still
NB> had to do it alone, as usual... just with Jessie in tow as well... :)
NB> Daddy was already gone to teach at the college, I'm sure... :)

As long as it was planned, and the teacher was in on the planning, then
it would have been OK. Was it full or half day kindergarten? I went to
half day, as did the sister below me, but both my brothers and youngest
sister had full day--all at the same school, same teachers.

NB> two NB>> later at the latest... My sister was 4 when she started (on
 NB> her
NB> NB>> own initiative) to bring Mommy and Daddy their morning coffee
NB> NB>> every morning before they got out of bed... She was the one
NB> that NB>> took more to the household tasks, too... ;)

RH> Is she the farmer's wife now? We weren't allowed any "on our own"
RH> cooking; it had to be for family or a school event (class bake sale or
 RH> whatever).

NB> No, this is yet another sister... ;) (There's 6 girls in the family,
NB> so five sisters to choose from... [g]) The coffeemaker had been set
NB> on timer to come on in the morning, and it had been Daddy's morning
 NB> "job"
NB> to get the coffee for Mommy and him for wake-up... I think Lesesne
NB> poured the coffee, added milk, maybe the sugar too, and grabbed a few
NB> cookies (maybe graham crackers) to go with it, as was the usual
NB> practice when Daddy did it... :)

Saw Daddy doing it so figured she could do it as well. FYI--I'm 2nd
oldest, first girl. In order, there's Bill, me, Lisa, Don & Marta. Just
about 3 weeks short of 7 years between Bill & Marta so for that space of
time my parents had 5 teen agers one year.

RH> Mom always did almost everything until she started working
RH> but by then we my next younger sister and I could do some things. It
RH> wasn't until she moved into the library and started to got to school
RH> part time that I really moved into the kitchen. Can't say that I
RH> enjoyed that (or housework--neccessary "evils") but I got to be an OK
RH> cook (better than either of my sisters) before I left home.

NB> Daddy sometimes helped in the kitchen, sometimes we had "help" come in
NB> to give Mommy a hand for all the housework, but from a fairly early

My dad only worked in the kitchen if Mom was sick/otherwise laid up
while he was working. After she started working, he fixed his own lunch.
He did more and more as the years went on but didn't take over the
kitchen until Mom broke her hip a couple of years ago. The summer she
was on bed rest while expecting Marta they hired various local teen age
girls to help out.

NB> age we kids were encouraged to do whatever was within our capability.
 NB> I
NB> don't really know when I started helping in the kitchen... simple
NB> stuff probably from age 7 or 8 or so... I think I've mentioned before

I didn't cook but had to help with setting the table, drying dishes,
etc. When I was a Brownie scout, we had to do something we'd never done
before so Mom had me fix supper (under her direction). That was the
first of I don't know how many meals I've cooked in that kitchen.

NB> that I cooked everything, for all 3 meals, for my 12th birthday...
NB> Planned the menus myself, got Daddy to take me shopping for the
 NB> special stuff we
NB> didn't have already in the house, and did quite a bit of semi-fancy
NB> stuff (from the Betty Crocker Boys and Girls Cookbook, mostly)... By

I have that cook book around, probably up in M'ville. Got it for a
birthday present when I was 8 years old.

NB> then, helping with the cooking was already one of my regular (rotated)
NB> chores... ;) Along with dishes, and various forms of housework...

Cleaning the bathrooms, our bedroom, dusting.................I know the
drill.

NB> NB>> Maybe some of each... ;) Has Steve had any responses yet from
NB> NB>> sending out resumes...? Or hasn't he sent any out quite yet...?

RH> He's not sent any out yet. I'm going to wait on the freezer stock
RH> up a bit more tho.

NB> You just never know... I suppose if you saw some sales too good to
NB> pass up, the freezer would get more stocked sooner than later... ;)

I'm going to hold off for a bit, even tho there is a good sale on meat
at Lowe's this week.

NB> prayers NB>> Sunday... I know there are a number of people at church
 NB> that are
NB> NB>> faithfully praying for him and for Don as well... :)

RH> We do appreciate it. I think my brothers would go "yeah, whatever; if
RH> it makes you feel better" (but they don't know that it does---G---).

NB> Maybe one of these days, they'll catch on... :) We can pray for
 NB> that, too... ;)

But don't hold your breath expecting a positive answer to that one.

RH> We're thinking of heading south in a bit to see for ourselves what
RH> needs doing and also visit Steve's folks.

NB> Very good idea... :) Especially now that Steve can drive again...
 NB> and school isn't an issue... :)

Exactly! Only school we have to be concerned with is grandkid's
schedules.(G)

Catch you later,
