I got one once called "Summer Breeze" which as probably the least objectionable
I have come across. I cannot for the life of me remember the brand of daytime
drama sponsor who bottled it. And I refuse to invest the time/trouble seeking
it out - preferring to seek out the unscented product instead.

What do you consider to be the "smell of castile"? The Kirk's that I use is
made with coconut oil - no animal fats or detergents - and no perfume. I don't
detect any more odour in Kirk's than in Ivory - actually, thinking back to the
last time I had and used a bar of Ivory (see, the memory is NOT the first thing
to go) the Kirk's has less aroma of any sort than the Ivory.

Of course, when I was growing up I learned the use from my hero - my Granddad -
and he used it partly because it would raise a cleansing lather in the hardest
water ... which both the farm's well and the Carlinville, IL municipal water
system were in contention of the prize of "hardest water". I also thought it
neat that after working in the tomato patch that the soap suds would turn green
when we washed out hands and arms.

ML> Persimmons are like miniature pumpkins, with a dusty-grayish-orange
 ML> look, about 1" to 1 1/2" in diameter, with a strawberry-like hull
 ML> on the top.

ML> They form as the summer continues, and nothing I know of will eat
ML> them from the tree! Too bitter!

ML> They are NOT edible until AFTER the second frost, and then they
ML> usually fall from the tree. Harvest them from the ground, picking
ML> them carefully, so as to avoid bruised spots, bird pecks, and
 ML> general dirt.

Perhaps that person's persimmon trees bore bitter fruit - even when it was
ripe. Our persimmon tree bore fruit that was edible if allowed to ripen on the
tree. Green persimmons were, of course, bitter and astringent beyond belief.
But, the second frost canard is purest buffalo bagels.

American persimmons come fully ripe about the time of the first frost - and
hang on the tree(s) until late in the winter. The wood is often used by
instrument makers and cabinet makers. And the fruit make some wonderful
"butters", preserves, breads, cakes, cookies, etc. My grandmother made a
"freezer" jam that my parents and I really liked. Georgia, not so much.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Persimmon Jam
Categories: Five, Fruits, Citrus, Preserving, Condiments
      Yield: 4 Half-pints

      5 c Pureed persimmons
      3 c White sugar
    1/4 c Fresh lemon juice
    1/2 ts Grated orange zest
        pn Ground nutmeg

In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, combine
persimmon puree, sugar, lemon juice, orange zest and
nutmeg. Boil for 30 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

Pour into sterilized jars and seal. Store in the freezer.

As made by my Grandmother, Helen Moore. From a handwritten
index card I found in an old Jewel Tea Co recipe book.
