As hard as you try to be neat, there will always be a few stray crumbs
getting out. Could be there weren't enough for your folks to worry about
cleaning out the car every so often.

True, 2 are a lot less to look after than 5 or 6. Our girls were small
enough that a couple of changes of clothes could be tucked into the
diaper (or another) bag without taking up too much room. I'd had enough
times when a change was needed but not available that I started packing
one, just in case, early on.

Mom did the ham with a time-bake oven but a roast beef was done in the
electric fry pan. She may have gotten a smaller cut than your folks
since ours only went for two meals, and maybe a lunch for Dad.

We didn't get large portions either, and if we wanted 2nds on meat, we
had to have vegetable or potatoes as well, with it. Most often tho, 2nds
were only available for the latter 2 items.

It also gave you a chance to talk without the time taken away in the
kitchen for your last minute prep work.

Yes, and a few months later we went to the ordination/installation
service for a young friend who had taken the position. It was at the
dinner afterward I got the recipe of an apple dapple cke that is one of
Steve's favorites.
