Ärende: kitchen was: exactit
=============================
Hi Nancy,

RH> Your dad sounds like he was quite competant in the kitchen. Did he
RH> live on his own for a time before he got married or did his mom bring
RH> him up to be comfortable in the kitchen?

NB> Well... he was a scientist, so was comfortable in the lab, not that
NB> much different from a kitchen after all... ;) I'm pretty sure he
 NB> lived on
NB> his own, though, when he was in grad school, and did his own cooking
NB> then... :) and his mom probably did allow him into the kitchen
NB> when he was younger... or his maiden aunts taught him cooking... :)
 NB> With
NB> Granddad off to sea (career Navy) most of the time, Grandmother relied
NB> on her family (she was oldest of 8 girls) to help her raise the boys,
NB> when she wasn't tootling up and down the coast following "Dad's
 NB> ship"...

He was quite well taught then. Surprising, as most males of that
generation still thought that the kitchen was not the place for them.
But, his mom's teaching served him well; the years he was on his owm he
could fend for himself quite well.

NB> RH>>> The summer she was on bed rest while expecting Marta they hired
NB> RH>>> various local teen age girls to help out.
NB> NB>> When we were in the Philly area, they often hired seminary
NB> wives, NB>> partly for Mommy's sake, partly to help out the
 NB> struggling seminary NB>> couples...

 RH> A win/win situation there.

NB> They both seemed to think so... :)

RH> I've seen some of it around here with the
RH> seminary & college; UPS hires quite a few of the guys.

NB> Unless one has an independent source of income (pension, etc), the odd
NB> jobs supply the food on the table.. ;) I remember one seminary
NB> student that was teaching at the Christian high school where I was...
NB> his wife was rather put out that on the forms there was a question,
NB> "Will your wife work while you are in school? If not, why not?" She
NB> thought that was a rather presumptuous assumption...

Quite presumptuous, but considering the intensity of a full time
seminary course load, they probably figured the husband would not work.
We know a lot of guys that are married, going thru just a couple of
courses per semester, so they can work and the wife stay at home with
the kids. It takes longer that way but well worth it if Mom doesn't have
to work outside the home. I didn't, because the Post 9/11 GI Bill had
enough benefits that neither of us needed to work to suppliment Steve's
retirement and VA disability pay.

NB> direction). That was RH>> the first of I don't know how many meals
NB> I've cooked in that kitchen. NB>> That sounds more memorable than
NB> whatever happened to be my first
 NB> NB>> encounter with cooking... ;)

RH> More memorable is when I made my first cake from scratch--Mom dropped
RH> a layer taking the pans out of the oven! She cut the other layer in
RH> half and frosted it but it only lasted for one meal, instead of the
RH> usual 2. It was my favorite chocolate cake too. (G)

NB> At least she fixed it up... So, she didn't trust you to be able to
NB> take it out of the oven safely...? Most memorable for me has to be
NB> my 12th birthday fixing all the meals... I was totally exhausted at
NB> the end of the day! But it was a good exhaustion... And, I was quite
 NB> content to
NB> go back to just helping with the cooking, and only for a meal at a
NB> time... (G) At least for quite a while... ;)

A birthday to remember, for sure tho.

NB> NB>>> Betty Crocker Boys and Girls Cookbook, mostly)...
NB> RH>> I have that cook book around, probably up in M'ville. Got it for
 NB> a RH>> birthday present when I was 8 years old.
 NB> NB>> Mine was a present, too... but I don't remember when... It's
NB> still NB>> with me, with the rest of my cookbooks... :)

RH> I ought to grab it next time I'm up and send it to Sarah & Audrey.
RH> Sarah is old enough to start using it; she will be 6 in a couple of
 RH> weeks.

NB> Hopefully they will treasure it and use it happily.. :) Mine got so
NB> much use that it's rather battered now... wouldn't pass along too
NB> well, unless to someone that could be very gentle with it... :)

I'll have to check the condition of mine. Mom used it almost every year
as Don liked the snow man cake for his January birthday.

NB> NB>> You can take some advantage of it just for current meals... :)

RH> I'm going to hold off--too close to the end of the month to be
RH> comfortable spending much more money.

 NB> There is that. :)

Also trying to empty out the freezer a bit to facilitate moving it.

 NB> along NB>> your appreciation... ;)

RH> Thanks, got the word Bill was in a private room because of some sort
RH> of infection. Hope it wasn't a MERSA type but wouldn't be surprised if
RH> it were. He's standing a bit longer now but still a long way to go.

NB> Might be just a precaution, to keep him from being exposed to other
NB> infections while he's fighting off this one... As has been said, this
NB> isn't going to be a short rehab, given the circumstances...

Not short, and not fun. It's been 2 1/2 months since the stroke, since
he's been home. Don't know how much longer he has to go.

Catch you later,
